Black Alice is around in the New 52, she showed up first in Keith Giffen’s DC vs. He-Man series and she’s currently on the Suicide Squad.
I have always had a love for monkeys and apes in comics so I am following JLApril with special interest. Detective Chimp is definitely my favorite. My first exposure to him would have been in DC Challenge when Paul Levitz brought him into that wild and crazy story. Come to think of it, that series was probably the first time I saw a lot of the deeper cuts of The DC universe in action–Congorilla, Viking Prince, Silent Knight, Darwin Jones, etc.
Since his triumphant return in Days of Vengeance and Shadowpact, I will buy just about any book that includes Bobo. You are correct that the story in the recent DC Ape-ril Special is fantastic.
Shag, I believe that you mentioned the cartoon Shirt Tales in one of the older podcasts floating around on the network. Whenever I read something featuring Bobo, his voice in my head sounds like Bogie the Orangutan from that show.
Looking forward to more geeky goodness,.
I did some research detective chimp first shows shows up in Batman Brave and bold in the golden age of justice teaser . But his first full appearance isn’t till season 2 episode 12 gorillas in our midts .
That’s the info I got chief . I feel like should make this message will self destruct in five minutes for all the inspector, gadget fans and Mission impossible fans in the audience. (Insert inspector gadget theme last bit with explosion).
Great podcast, Shag and Doug (and thank you for your consideration as regards the letter ‘z’, Mr Z).
I’d forgotten the details of this issue, it sounds all win, despite my not being a fan of the characterisation of Bobo back then as a super-cynical dipsomaniac.
I agree that the recent Ape-ril Special is terrific with the Detective Chimp story being the standout (and the Monkey Prince tale next up, did you ever try that series. Shag, I was surprised to find that I loved it?).
My dear Shag, Hyathis is cool! Also, way hot.
And so is the art of Carmine Infantino, certainly when he was drawing Bobo.
To continue being contrary, JLApe wasn’t terrible. Well, some of it wasn’t great. But the opening and closing issues written by Len Kaminski were great, as the JLA Ape-ril podcasts will have been reminded you by now. The closing chapter starring Martian Manhunter was exemplary.
The modern take on Bobo has been fun by having the “cute talking animal” develop a personality that’s far from cute. I also realized that this same thing was done with Rocket Raccoon around the same time to great effect. If DC movies had taken another path, maybe Bobo would be a movie star himself.
He still could be. it’s not too late
Waited for the trade on this issue. Starting to suspect it may not be coming…
Always great to hear gentleman Doug on a show.
Add my vote for a live-action Detective Chimp outing. From what I know about James Gunn, I’d bet it’s on his list for characters to use.
Thanks for playing the promo and referencing the DCOCD event types!
Comic book apes are definitely great (the Hot squad just cooed over Monsieur Mallah in my personal timeline).
I have still to read Shadowpact, believe it or not.
This is the first episode of this podcast I’ve listened to but I’ll definitely be listening to more after this. Detective Chimp is my all time favorite comic book character and I truly believe myself to be his single greatest fan, I’ve read almost every single appearance he’s had in the comics and you’re right, his story in the Ape-ril special is absolute peak fiction. I’m actually working on a script for a detective Chimp fan film and though I’ve been procrastinating on that for a while this episode inspired me to get back into it.
P.s: Kevin Michael Richardson voices Detective Chimp in Batman: The Brave and the Bold
