  1. One of the thing I like about Pod Dylan is that even when you don’t know the song, there’s a lot of interesting talk about the artist’s process – writing, recording, creating albums, interpreting on stage. Thanks guys.

  2. Once again, another fun and informative episode! I know this song from Rod Stewart ‘s great Never a Dull Moment. I did not know Dylan had not released it himself, makes me wonder what brought the song to Rods attention, maybe another version, maybe live performance?

    Thanks Rob and Phil!

    1. Hi Steve, thanks for your comments, glad you enjoyed the episode. Albert Grossman had Dylan record a bunch of demo songs (eventually released as the Witmark Demos official Bootleg in 2010) to circulate among the music community around 1964. It was recorded around 8 times prior to Stewart’s version by Johnny Cash, (i may have said to Rob that Baez first recorded it but it was Cash), Joan Baez, Judy Collins and Linda Ronstadt among others. Dylan had only played it live 3 times (all in 1964) before Stewart recorded it so I think we can guess that he heard one of these cover versions. As an aside if you google Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs – Mama, You’ve Been On My Mind you will find a version that demonstrates not only the politics of the recording industry at the time (Flatt was not a fan of singing Dylan songs but was “forced” to record a bunch of them) but also a curious fork in the road on the journey this song has travelled!
      Phil
