I haven’t read the manga. How are Clayface’s powers used in it?
Clay face in the batmanga verse likes to turn in kanju sized animals to commit his crimes .
And do to how he got his powers there on time limit he has return return to the cave he got his powers
To submerge him self in the mud again for recharge.
Waid and Samnee perfectly executed that twist ending! There were just enough tips to not feel like a cheat, but not heavy-handed enough to spoil it. And the big panel itself? Yowch! It also was chilling to see that they killed Grimaldi’s father also. That’s cold.
I didn’t really think too much about Grimaldi’s fate in this series. There’s been other instances of characters created in retroactive series like this one, being a set up for said characters to “return” to modern stories shortly afterwards. But yeah, being summarily dispatched was a fine tactic as well. I liked Waid using the 2 big failings of arrogance that happen a lot to supervillains: underestimating (Grimaldi thinking he had Clayface under his thumb), and short-sightedness (the Faces killing Grimaldi instead of continuing to use him). It bites them all in the backside.
I should have had more faith in Mark Waid. I totally thought, and was very unhappy, the he appeared to be making Two-Face look like a mook to make “his” new character look cool. That has happened way too often with writers who I don’t feel match Waid’s skill. Remember how Gerry Conway always took a piss on Doc Ock to make Hammerhead appear more formidable? I’m glad Waid fooled me this time.
Since the character is named Black Mask and usually dresses like a gangster, I’ve always assumed that he is a tribute to the famous pulp magazine Black Mask. Black Mask is considered to be essential in making hardboiled crime drama popular. It published Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Earle Stanley Gardner and many more. Classics like The Maltese Flacon was first published as a serial in Black Mask. Having a character named after the magazine who dresses like a character from a hardboiled crime story just seems like the perfect tribute.
