I agree this episode feels a little un-Cheers-like, what with Woody gone and the other guys (minus Paul, who could have gone with the rest of the guys) out on the road. The set they’re on for the desert looks almost like a leftover set from the original Star Trek when they were on another planet. I mean, both shows were made by Paramount, so who knows. And we have another cartoon-like gag with Sam being electrocuted and then saying, “Diane?” Nonetheless, I still found the episode fun. I like Paul being in the latter half of the B plot in the bar, so we have at least one of the male barflies at the bar.
I was wondering if Woody might have been filming White Men Can’t Jump, which came out the following spring, and if maybe they filmed this episode before the season premiere to accommodate his filming schedule. But I didn’t find any support for that. Woody’s movie career really starts taking off these final two seasons, and as I recall, he’s gone from a handful of episodes here and there these last two seasons.
Clearly an atypical episode of Cheers, it may have been 2 B-plot ideas that got put together. But it was equal parts witty and silly, so I had fun rewatching it.
