Great discussion. This is a favorite Gary episode, although it strains believability that the police and coroner’s office went along with this and Gary apparently spent the money on a casket, funeral, and burial site! And how did he approach the other Cheers employees and customers and get them to go along with it all? Or I suppose he may have approached only one of them, most likely Carla, and she got everyone else onboard. Or maybe someone at Gary’s gave Norm a free beer to get him to listen to them!
I wonder if Gary was in the casket when they buried it, or if he got out somehow without Sam knowing, like in the car during the funeral procession. It reminds me of a similar situation in a Woody-Kelly episode later this season that I like a lot but that is very unbelievable when you think about it!
I think the Gary in this episode is the Earth-2 Gary and the other one is the Earth-1 Gary, whom I prefer. I always assumed the switches back and forth in actors was based on whoever was available for a given episode, but the Earth-1 Gary is definitely funnier in my opinion. The Gary in this episode is taller, so I wonder if that was one reason they used him because Sam had to confuse him with Woody at the end. I checked their respective heights. Woody is 5’9 or 5’10, this Gary is 6 feet, and the other Gary is 5’7, so there’s variation among all of them. Ted Danson is 6’2, though, so I guess he towers over most of them!
Yeah, I like this Gary actor, Robert Desidario, in general, but I think he would’ve been good as a different character on the show. Joel Polis really captured the humor and the smarminess of Gary that you just wanted to hate.
I can’t help but overthink Frasier getting a Spider-Man costume for little Frederick. As you guys said, the most recent TV series would have been Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, and the concurrent solo Spider-Man animated series which I only learned about a couple years ago. But Spidey was firmly in pop culture by this point, even if he wasn’t as ubiquitous as Superman and Batman. Previously was his original animated series, the live action TV show, and even his appearances on PBS’s Electric Company. Like usual with the Cheers writers, they easily could have pulled from what costumes *they* remember from Halloween as kids, but it’s fair to say Spidey is an evergreen character by this point.
That hologram effect of Carla’s head was honestly kinda cool. I’m sure the studio audience didn’t see anything, but for the broadcast, it did the job and was a fun addition. But Frasier talking about Lilith’s staff pulling that prank on him, followed by her “heh-heh-heh” was delightful! Sure, it was a downplayed less emotional laugh, or a sneaky, satisfied snicker. Loved it.
