Great discussion. I liked the cold open because my grandfather always told the “is your refrigerator running” joke. I like to imagine Lilith telling this joke on the phone in her monotone voice. It would have been hilarious to hear her, but maybe it’s funnier this way because we get to use our imagination.
This is a rare episode with scenes set inside one of the two restrooms of the bar. It’s the only episode I can think of that has scenes inside the women’s restroom. There were scenes in the men’s room in an episode of Season One (and maybe an episode in Season Two), but I don’t remember any in the women’s room other than this. I’m not sure they were always consistent about where each restroom was located.
It’s funny that Sam and Rebecca were babysitting Carla’s kids a few episodes back, but here it’s 1:30 a.m. and Carla has no idea where they are! The loud audience reaction to John Allen Hill at the end was great.
This episode was a winner. First, it’s good to see the Cranes being such great parents, making prank phone calls in a bar while paying a babysitter to watch Frederick. Parenting! Honestly hilarious!
About cars, the last bit I remember was Sam trying to sell his Vette, and then begging to get it back from the buyer, just for Frazier to grab the phone and say “Lilith, give Sam his car back!”
It was great to have Peter to talk about postal carriers in conjunction with Cliff’s minor subplot. Speaking of that, his outfit was right in line with costumes I had to deal with for performances of the musical “1776”. I think there might have been one with that color scheme, maybe, but also, there was a wide variety of colors, so it’s not unreasonable color scheme. But you know John R absolutely wanted the worst one possible.
But the highlight was naturally the start of Hill-telli. (That might violate the “shipping name” rules, but I like how it sounds.) I can only think of one episode where there’s actually a story involved, but I think it’s a background bit. We’ll see. But Carla’s regret and arousal is perfect. Lilith summed it up perfectly. “Whoa.” And it’s fun to rewatch the series, because seeing Carla and Hill interact before this episode makes me look for hints of this, and it’s there. You can chalk up Carla’s earlier comments to being sex positive, or appreciating someone as snarky as she is, or wonder if the writers were laying the groundwork for this very story. Regardless, it’s hilarious and continues the one truth about Carla’s love life: she makes bad choices.
