  1. Great discussion. I think this is the first instance of the ongoing theme about Paul always missing out on the best part of whatever is happening in the bar, which continues all the way to the series finale. Actually, I don’t know if it happens again before the finale, but it is a funny gag in these two episodes.

Cliff’s reference to going to Mexico to escape a world war or whatever made me think of the first two Terminator movies, in which Sarah Connor and John Connor went to Mexico to stay under the radar amidst a looming apocalypse. Since Terminator 2 came out in the summer of 1991, and this episode aired in the fall of 1991, I wonder if that was what inspired the writers to include that line by Cliff.

When I started watching this episode I couldn’t remember if Woody and Kelly were already engaged, but then I saw they get officially engaged at the end of the episode. Now I remember they sort of got unofficially engaged before she left for Europe in Season Eight, in the episode when Woody climbs up to her bedroom. It’s cool how the show slowly built their romance over the years, culminating in their now being engaged and having a wedding in one of the best episodes of the series at the end of this season.

    1. I was remembering the “secret engagement” too, but it really feels like the writers completely forgot about that! I loved the intersection of bringing Henri’s advances to a head with Woody officially proposing. What a great reward for viewers following this show.

I agree the character of Kelly wouldn’t have worked without Jackie Swanson’s stellar performance. She brings the sweetness with sincerity needed to keep Kelly endearingly clueless. Such a joy to watch.

So about Woody’s hiding space: how did he get up there before this episode? It sounded like Sam had never boosted him before, but Woody also didn’t volunteer to get his ladder or whatever to not inconvenience Sam. Is it a big deal? No. Will I obsess about this meaningless point? Of course!
