  1. Great discussion. After listening to your plot synopsis, I have only today realized that I always misunderstood a critical part of this episode. When Mrs. Gaines said at the end that she was playing a joke on Woody, I always thought she meant that she actually was in the coffin posing as the corpse as they repeatedly buried it and opened the coffin. Now I realize her explanation about the hearing-aid meant that she heard Woody at the party when he was talking to Sam, and she then was playing a joke when she was alone with him at the party, not at the graveyard itself. Anyway, it’s still a great episode. (And in my defense, Gary did a similar thing a few episodes back, so such a gag is not inconceivable.)

I have to agree Woody is the MVP. Mr. Gaines is hilarious in the line he delivers to Sam; I would love to say that someday. And it’s so absurd that the blood guy would literally be chasing Carla to get her blood.

  2. Also, I agree Celeste Holm was great as Mrs. Gaines, and it would have been cool if she had been in more of this episode or other episodes. I see she lived to be 95 years old and died in 2012. Her voice seems very familiar, but I’m not sure where I would have seen her other than in this episode. She was on a few episodes of Archie Bunker’s Place and the soap opera Loving, so I may have seen her on one of those. I’ve never really seen Three Men and a Baby, but that’s cool she played the mother of Ted Danson’s character.

Speaking of ages, I always think of Kelly’s father as being so old, but I see that the actor who played him, Richard Doyle, was born in 1945, so he was actually younger than I am now when he played Mr. Gaines.

  3. Great call on this being a horror episode! I saw the elements but hadn’t put that together. Love it!

It’s a good thing this is a sitcom, or Rebecca would be pressing charges against Carla. I doubt the authorities would think it’s funny.

Oh yes, Norm does have a dog. In one of the season openers, where the recap was all outside shots of each character’s home and just voiceovers, Norm comes home saying “I missed you, too”, but then we learn it’s his dog because he barks and wakes up Vera, to Norm’s chagrin.

I was just thinking, Woody still has to work the extra jobs to pay off the ring after this episode. Yes, he finally was allowed to sleep here, but there’s no indication he’s any closer to getting out of debt. Oh, Woody.

  4. Always a great time when you have Siskoid on as a guest.
1000 beers sounds like a lot, but over 10 years that only works out to be about 2 beers a week.
If all of Norm’s drinking is on screen, then… that’s actually pretty responsible alcohol consumption.

(I appreciate that the word “If” is doing a LOT of heavy lifting there. It’s not like it’s the first time someone would have woefully underrepresented their alcohol intake to a doctor!)
