Great discussion. I had thought the same thing about how Cliff’s “jokes” are sort of a riff on Seinfeld, in that he simply makes an observation and then says, “What’s up with that?” The Seinfeld series itself later did similar spoofs. When Kramer was pretending to do standup comedy in Jerry’s apartment, he said, “So what’s the deal with politics? I don’t get it. Am I right, people?” And when Jerry spoke at his elementary school, he said, “Hey kids, what’s the deal with homework? You’re not working on your home.” I can hear Cliff doing both of those jokes with a “What’s up with that?” added at the end.
And I agree Lilith is the highlight of this episode with her laughing at Cliff’s jokes. Lilith is so smart that I almost think that maybe there’s some hidden level of humor to Cliff’s jokes that only Lilith understands.
And speaking of Seinfeld, the Cliff and Carla subplots converging at the end is very Seinfeldian.
I can totally relate to Norm starting to think about lunch between 10:30 and 11:00. But once again, it’s crazy that the bar is in full swing at that time of the morning. Last week Norm and Cliff were getting kicked out of the bar by Woody at 2:30 a.m., and here Norm and Woody are already in the bar at 10:30 a.m. So, if Woody is still working the graveyard shift at the graveyard, he is working pretty much 24/7.
While Woody’s money problems don’t mention the engagement ring, at least they haven’t been ignored so the continuity is fun. Even more so the callback to Frazier being a bad tipper!
So Frazier’s line that Lilith “can also hear dog whistles” just saying that she hears things normal people wouldn’t, or implying even deeper her hearing things that don’t exist to normals? Not a great look, Frazier. But hey, both Cranes are at the bar, not spending time with Frederick. Again!
Hilarious that Carla is so desperate to take advantage of a possible loophole, that she doesn’t give it any time to consider. Just jumps in immediately. Like her “relationship” with “Zeus.” Or should I say “Z-ewwwww-us.”
