I’ve been a huge fan of this documentary since I saw it in the 1990s. I’m sure to include some segments during my lectures in my Film History course. I also highly recommend Scorsese’s follow-up on Italian cinema.
A similar documentary worth watching is My Journey Through French Cinema. (2016) by Bertrand Tavernier.
I’m sure you’re familiar with Mark Cousins’ The Story of Film. It’s more idiosyncratic, but definitely a must watch.
I meant to mention Scorsese’s JOURNEY TO ITALY doc, which I have not seen yet!
I have seen THE STORY OF FILM, we enjoyed it very much.

PBS ran a documentary series in 1995 titled “American Cinema” that was available on DVD & is perhaps on YouTube. It runs about 9 hrs.
“Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film” (1980) is a truly great deep dive into the early days of movies. It’s narrated by James Mason & episodes have been on Internet Archive & YouTube. It runs about 12 hours. Many of the silent era creators were still around for interviews.
I’d also recommend “The Men Who Made the Movies”, a series of 9 documentaries from the early 1970s. Episodes feature Hitchcock, Capra, Cukor among others.
