  1. Something that jumps out at me from this early MASH episode is that they were still trying to nail down Frank’s character (i.e., how unlikable is Frank Burns?). The playfulness between Hawkeye, Trapper, and Frank at the end of the episode, and the fact that Frank basically forgives them, is a dynamic that you don’t see in later seasons. I think it’s a shame, because this take on Frank makes him more of 3-dimensional character, compared to the 2-dimensional character, with no redeemable characteristics, that he becomes.

Thanks for another great MASHCast episode, gentlemen.

  2. I think this episode can best be described as primitive. As you pointed out, the story is all over the place, and there are so many strange non sequiturs. My jaw literally dropped when I first saw the scene of Hawkeye undressing Lt. Dish with his eyes (Karen Philpp’s wiki says she posed for Playboy around this time to promote the show—incredible to think of the people who tuned in expecting a sex comedy and got “Sometimes You Hear the Bullet” instead). The wildlife narration scene is also very bizarre, though I did enjoy Alan’s Bela Lugosi impression. Thank god the show evolved away from this, but it’s fascinating to think of the different directions MASH could’ve gone in.
