Fun episode C&C (&A). I’ve thought about doing a “trailer round-up” show for Film and Water but laziness tends to win out.
I’m pretty much there with you–JL should be at the top of the list, but its at the bottom in terms of my expectations. Thor I didn’t really care about, but that trailer is so good it’s rocketed to (nearly) the top of the list. It’s a perfect trailer.
And yes, Cate Blanchett as a goth chick is everything I hoped it would be. Yowza.
Laziness DID win out…hence this episode. 😉
Cindy’s obviously trying to work against type, because I deserved the Kate Blanchett slap. She’s Goth HOT!!!
Chris
Before seeing each of these trailers, my interest and enthusiasm for the six movies would fall into this order:
1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
2. Spider-Man: Homecoming
3. Thor: Ragnarok
4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
5. Wonder Woman
6. Justice League
After seeing each of these trailers, my interest and enthusiasm for the six movies falls into this order:
1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
2. Thor: Ragnarok
3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
4. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Fun, short little episode!
Now, if Wonder Woman ends up being a clay baby, will it put it back on your list? 😉
Chris
Possibly.
Oh dear you dropped the only two DC titles. Kind of a sign of the times, isn’t it… I hope WW and even JL move in the right direction towards redemption for DC.
Very enjoyable episode. SW is SW so as you said it hardly matters what the trailer shows. The Homecoming trailer actually dampened my enthusiasm, with Vulture being an Iron Man villain for some reason. I’m optimistic for WW. Thor Ragnarok was grouse! GOTG2 actually starts today in Australia so the trailer is shortly to be irrelevant for me (in 2.5 hours).
Looking forward to your Batcentric JLMay episode!
Wow, really? You get GotG2 Two weeks before us? I’m going to have to go underground and stay off the net for two weeks!
Well, except for that JLMay episode!
Chris
Nice ep guys. Well done. The SW teaser is probably the best teaser I have seen since the Force Awakens teaser. You are spot on with your comments Chris, trailers these days have a terrible habit of giving too much away.
I’m excited for Spider-man. I feel it is completely ridiculous that this is Hollywood’s 3rd go at this in such a short amount of time but I’m excited because when Spidey popped up in Civil War I thought FINALLY, they got it right. This is my Spider-man. I did not like the Toby Maguire version. I liked the Andy Garfield take, it felt pretty close to the mark but his Peter Parker seemed “too cool” if you take my meaning. But this version seems on point.
I felt the same about the Thor movies. He is great in both Avengers movies, but the solo movies have been the low point of the very high standard of Marvel films so far. BUT this trailer is fantastic!! And yes I’m totally willing to have people say “That’s only because they used Led Zeppelin” and I don’t fricking care!! Just like the trailer for the new King Arthur movie with Charlie Hunnam, or Sons of Medieval Anarchy as I have dubbed it. No idea why Jax is pulling a sword out of a stone or why there are giant elephants but that trailer rocks!! Brilliant song choice for Thor, although unlike Cindy and Chris’s throw backs to School Of Rock, all I can see/hear are the female Disney characters going all out in Shrek. And like everyone I totally dig the “We know each other, from work.” line. Great stuff.
The trailer to Wonder Woman does look great. I know some people *cough* Ryan Daly *cough* have big issues with what it seems to say about the altered origin story they have decided to go with, and I agree. Why change the contest or leave it out or go around it?? Just makes no sense. But that being said it does look very very good. The costume, accents, scenery and sounds all seem on point. Great scenes of her using the bracers and lasso. I feel that it is carrying the hopes of the future DC cinematic universe on its shoulders which might be a little unfair given JL is coming out so soon after.
Now for JL… the trailer doesn’t even look exciting… What should be the greatest geek-out moment since the Avengers and they can even make a 2 and a half minute trailer exciting, larger than life or even colourful even though the have a guy that’s supposed to be in a bright red costume. How do you do that?!?!? I’m with Cindy, the Flash’s costume is the worst… I want this to be good but I know it won’t be. Like many have already said, it seems like they are doing their to repair the damage done by BvS but its going to take a couple more movies I think. Which is a shame cause if this flops as bad as BvS then I can see them giving up. But it will make money. I will go see it, my wife and kids will go see it, I’m sure everyone will go see it so hopefully they can make enough cash to keep making more movies that will hopefully right the ship. I think Jason Momoa will definitely help. Not the look for Aquaman I would have went for but I think he will do a great job with what they give him. Same can be said for Ben Affleck. I thought he did a very good job with the Batman he was given. And eventually the one saving grace of MoS and BvS, Henry Cavil. I really like his work as Superman, he is believable as Superman. I just hope they finally give him a good Superman to play.
As for Guardian Vol 2, as Paul Hix has said its already out here in OZ and I have seen it. It can already hear the kinds of criticism that are going to be thrown at it but I enjoyed it. It is a lot of fun with even more great music so if you wanna go and get all pissy about it being “Nothing more then a series jokes strung together without any real plot” then to you I say go watch BvS. It has heaps of deep emotional, social and religious under-tones you can cut yourself to for hours.
Looks like Guardians of the Galaxy has addressed the one problem the original had, namely its sexist approach to female protagonists, which once seen cannot be unseen. With Nebula and Mantis added, it goes some way toward balancing the sausage fest.
The more I see of Wonder Woman, the better it looks! I think I’m… yes, I’m stoked! We have liftoff!
I heard the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer said too much, so I’ve avoided it and skipped over it here, but not your conversation, let me that to rest right now. I nevertheless don’t really have any comments.
Thor: Ragnarok had a GREAT trailer. Movie on the list I am most excited about.
And the one I am the least is of course Justice League. That hasn’t changed. Even the surfer bro Aquaman everyone is raving about fills me with ambivalence. I just don’t know what to make of him, and given Snyder’s previous work, it might be a case of trying too hard to be “funny” in the trailer. And when we get to the film it’s the most dour piece of dreck ever, y’know?
I love your idea for a minimalist trailer for Star Wars. They should totally do that one day. Brown paper bag edition!
I haven’t seen any of these trailers. I don’t plan on seeing any of these movies. I’m not an old grump. I’m an old cheapskate. I just don’t go out to movies very much. Now, that being said, here is what the trailers SOUNDED like:
” low subsonic rumble, rumble… quick metallic sound… louder rumbling…a voice with very little passion or emotion…several metallic sounds…increasing subsonic rumblings…indistinct music/OR old pop music you know very well…a snatch of dialogue that no people would ever say in real life…VERY, VERY, LOUD SUBSONIC RUMBLING… loud explosion…someone speaking in dead earnestness… more explosions…more metallic sounds…VERY LOUD LOW RUMBLINGS AND MUSIC AND EXPLOSIONS…a different voice saying something sarcastic in a completely different way of speaking than we’ve heard…rumble, rumble, rumble, metallic sound…familiar/or generic-movie music…a final pithy comment…metallic sound”
I DID like Lego Batman, though.
No, you’re not an old grump at all, Ward. 😉
Seriously though, I think there is a samness to nearly every movie trailer these days. It’s almost like there’s a pattern EVERY studio follows. The only difference is how much of the movie it actually spoils. Exceptions were the Thor trailer and the Last Jedi teaser, in my opinion anyhow.
