Who’s Editing #6: Doctor, Doctor

Fire and Water Presents: Who's Editing Episode 6! Non-doctor Siskoid and Absolutely Yes a Doctor Anj take on an issue of already pretty stellar stars and put out their best re-imaginings of every hero and place in the Directory, and maybe a couple of villainous bonus books as well! They've got their work cut out for them. Hopefully the experiment won't land them in the emergency room!

Elongator’s mate murdered by Item’s ex. Something nefarious is playing out amidst Just’a Lotta Animals, which appears to be spilling out onto the Zoo Crew. Chlorophyll Kid memorial variant cover by GREGG SCHIGIEL
Say what you will about the missing in action Amanda Waller, but Tyson figured his black life mattered at least a little to her in a way it sure as hell doesn’t to new boss Sarge Steel. Ambush Bug is under orders to lead a makeshift Suicide Squad of Chlorophyll Kid, Stone Boy, Savant, Ventriloquist, Clock King and Bolt on a guided tour of Dinosaur Island, courtesy of what’s left of Captain Storm. These losers are looking for the hidden base of the time-traveling bad guy Monarch, but after what Bug did to Dreadbolt, Tyson’s got bigger worries. Among them, that it seems like the voice in Savant’s head is having a conversation with Irwin Schwab that Tyson’s only privy to half of, and also, y’know, the raptors he’s been terrified of since seeing Jurassic Park as a kid. Yadda yadda not all of us will make it so-on-and-some-such the dumpy kid in the Merry Men onsie makes a heroic sacrifice world’s tiniest violin. Just don’t let the creepy girl make a skin suit out of the remains, as a basic courtesy?

    APOKOLIPS DELUXE EDITION HC
    written by ADAM WARREN
art and cover by JOSÉ LADRÖNN
Adam Warren and Eisner Award winning artist José Ladrönn’s critically acclaimed, #1 New York Times bestselling 12-issue Fourth World Saga series is now available in deluxe hardcover format for the first time ever! Orion is a patriot and defender of his adopted home New Genesis, an unspoiled paradise populated by extraordinarily powerful demigods and the most advanced technology in existence. He was raised there by the Highfather after being traded in an inhuman peace treaty for Izaya’s birth son, Scott. Eventually, their war with Apokolips reignited, and Orion would be in near constant conflict with his native world. Yet, regardless of his long history of unquestioning service, New Genesis ever isolated him. Despite Orion’s fabricating an attractive visage, they seemed to see underneath it to deem him so ugly– too angry– somehow forever tainted from his very conception. With the seeming ultimate defeat and captivity of Darkseid, Orion finally has time to reflect– to consider– and to consult his birth father directly with his inquiries. How is it that New Genesis could enjoy such abundance with so little seeming effort? By contrast, how did Apokolips become an industrial dystopia reliant on the most toxic power sources and “human capitol?” What forces could lead Orion’s bloodline to routine fratricide, or turn the former Prince Uxas into so fearsome a creation as Darkseid? And upon discovering the unspeakable truths Supertown thrives upon, will Orion determine that he’s more Darkseid’s son than Highfather’s? Once the Justice League of America become involved, the shape of the universe itself will be altered by the finale of this epic!
Named A.V. CLUB/THE ONION’s best series of 2019, Apokolips is known for hard-hitting, thought-provoking action, intrigue, romance, and revenge!

Tomorrow Hardtack & Rushertom have reached the third and final floor of the Haunted House in search of the last piece of the urn, but do they have more to fear from Zachary Graves or Frisky Tom? Ezekial Vicker reaches Leo Nardo to petition him for mechanized Ultimate Men of War to aid the Swordquest twins against the Centipedes, but that wouldn’t suit King Restivo’s ends. ATOMIC #6
    written by TOM KING
art & cover by RAGS MORALES
In Sub Diego, Ryan and Jackson face ambush by Black Manta as Cal Durham and Thomas Dinawa look on. Transported to Markovia, Damage is befriended by Rocker Bonn as they’re both induced to join the new Masters of Disaster, which at least positions them opposite Shadowspire. Having forced Kobra out of Pan Balgravia, Dr. Adrianna Anderson considers becoming a baroness. The Cybernetic also proposes a seemingly natural alliance with Victor Cypher in Austanburg that would expand his metahuman army and international reach. The Earl of Greed recognizes Cyber as a threat, and frees Atom Smasher to buy himself time to reenforce his own influence. In Washington D.C., Steve Trevor enlists Colonel Tomorrow’s aid to investigate Leviathan’s role in propping up Baron Bedlam in Markovia, but first they must survive an assassination attempt by Marque. The reactivated Cyclotron initiates a secret secondary programming, leading it to ransack and destroy a long disused Argent safehouse, which draws the attention of Eddie Fyers. With Sarge Steel having taken de facto control over Task Force X, the Department of Metahuman Affairs may have finally triumphed in its cold war against the C.B.I. Finally, Ray Palmer now has access to Shadowslide in Dakota via Iota, but recognizes that he’s outmatched, should there come a confrontation. Thankfully, the Hawks are just a phone call away.

    BARDA #5
    written by JAMES TYNION IV
    art by BERNARD CHANG
    cover by ALEXIS ZIRITT
Big Barda 1971 variant cover by STEVE RUDE
During The Darkseid War, Barda entered into a pact to return to the Female Furies. She had honored it, even after Scott perished, and Granny Goodness shed not a tear for her long lost charge. With all that Barda had endured in the X-Pit, girding her to mete out vengeance against Granny and DeSaad over the Torment-Circuit, Goodness’ remorselessness rang hollow. There was no cause or purpose for her actions, and the pointlessness proves that this was not her doing. Barda’s captors were “Follower” pseudo-units in their likeness, meant to direct her anger by a third party. The most obvious culprit is Baron Bedlam, and any deficiencies in his automatons could be smoothed over by the Mind-Force. It would do no good to smash one of his animates. Barda must meet Bedlam in his mental kingdom to insure that he pays for her indignities, but this would be his realm, all to his advantage. To think otherwise would be dreaming…

The Calculator wouldn’t be welcome in Gotham City under normal circumstances, but having him recruiting locally for the wrong side of the Barons’ conflict in Europe seems even worse somehow. Doctor Double X may be deceased, but his technology isn’t. With Barbara spending less and less time out of her chair, and a renewed romantic spark with Nightwing as she convalesces, will she be too distracted to keep her word to Black Lightning? Babs also needs to do recruiting of her own, having lost Huntress and Spoiler, though Harper Row could really use some help paying for her engineering degree…

Beast Boy & Terra’s attempt to reform Defiance immediately stalls with Ravager undercover somewhere, Power Girl presumed dead, and Gar outright refusing to approach Kid Flash or Jericho (for vastly different reasons.) However, the pair’s investigation into the whereabouts of Colony escapees leads them to Coral City, and the loose collective of young metahumans dubbed The Movement. Virtue signals her willingness to help after several of her friends were kidnapped by Project N.O.W.H.E.R.E., and she’s not alone.

    BEAUTIFUL DREAMER #5
    written by GRACE ELLIS
    art by POP MHAN
    cover by FRED HARPER
Spent fumes from the toxi-cloud bursts that keep the Bugs away waft downwind, but it only adds to the disgusting odor of spoilt air. Raw sewage trickles out onto the streets of fallen Supertown, yet Dreamer’s stomach ever rumbles. She hasn’t eaten in three days, yet she’s still expected to keep up with her lessons. Magna-force picks up the pieces of the city to clear pathways, but there’s no materials with which to rebuild. The work is necessary, as there’s nothing left to power anti-gravs or protonoids. Magnar always has a morsel to spare for pretty young girls, but Dreamer isn’t yet that hungry. Her thoughts remain on DeSaad’s final vidi-screen taunt, that he knew it was she who betrayed Big Bear’s confidence, and that he would make sure that fact would be whispered in her estranged husband’s ear as he suffers in the Armagetto…

Santiago Ramírez was too smart and too experienced to try delivering a $100M movie on a $30M budget expecting everything to go as planned. He knew that he would have to cut corners, take risks, and, y’know, the whole Wayne Tarrant factor. So when things inevitably go awry, like that “Checkmate” deal being a scam, the Studio sends in the producers to nickle & dime Santi to a very probable death. I mean, who saw Sharon Scott being the provocateur of a sex scandal getting dragged all over the internet? And of course Jock has another deal going on the side, so when it seems like the production would be better off cashing out for insurance, he hires the Demolition Team (at non-union rates, no less) to sabotage Blue Devil. When Santi’s best hope comes in the form of Open-Window Man? Oh yeah, he’s screwed.

CRISIS ACROSS INFINITE TIME TIE-IN! The endeavor has fared rather poorly. The collective egos and conflicting agendas of the Brainiac Trust (an oxymoronic term) have been unbearable. Brain Wave Sr. was revealed to be an undead Black Lantern containing the soul of the late William Hand. Junior is in a fetal position being coddled by a shared mental illusion of his also dead mother, the Girl of 1,000 Gimmicks. The Brain now inhabits the mighty robotic form of the Machine Messiah in order to… return to Earth and stalk his estranged love, Monsieur Mallah? Querl Dox is seriously reconsidering the wisdom of the entire affair just as Vril Sr. installs the 31st Century C.O.M.P.U.T.O. as the operating system on Power Boy’s refurbished Mother Box… because he needs a New God for his collection? Techne & the Dark Outlaws arrive just ahead of The Citadel, tipped off by the conniving stowaway Demonia clone. The Genesian Spring has reached Kalanor, as rampant unemployment and poverty rack the planet. Their typically absentee and widely loathed dictator Despero has returned home to quell the unrest, but his brutal tactics to dissolve the mass protests only steels the resolve of followers backing opposition leaders Jasonar and Saranna. It remains in the interests of the Network for the Establishment and Maintenance of Order to strengthen Despero’s grip, with Darkstar Ro of Dhor especially sympathetic to his contemporary. However, his partners Manchukk and Chaser Bron advise NEMO that they would be better positioned to broker a peace with the Kalanorians after the presumed inevitable fall of Despero. Despite the establishment of a no-fly zone, the D’amsi have secretly hired the Blood-Sisters of Bellatrix to support rebel forces in retaking the Flame of Py’tar, an enormous symbolic and strategic victory. Soon, allied Lantern Corps begin providing rebels air cover, and a desperate, despairing Despero fumes as he intends to take as many of his enemies with him into the next life!

Erin Bia O’Rourke-Singh was born in 2007 to heroic members of an exploratory team that saved all of humanity from extinction. If she looks a bit mature for a fourteen year old, it’s because she’s a good decade older. A fugitive from Earth-28, the mercenary known as Dart traveled from the future of her world to the recent past of ours, alongside her crew in the Atari Force. Over the course of saving their reality again, this time as the last from a genocidal alien Dark Destroyer, Atari Force had accumulated a substantial rap sheet. The team hoped for a fresh start on another Earth in another time. Too bad one of the members was impregnated with a piece of the Destroyer, causing them to sabotage the mission, and shattering the group. Dart was born to explore the multiverse, and its energies gave her powers of involuntary precognition, to go along with her sharp mind and exemplary fighting skills. A soldier-of-fortune with a conscience, Dart has sold her services on the cheap to topple oppressive regimes throughout Eurasia and Africa, making do with the inferior technology of Earth-0. Her low profile is challenged by fresh visions of the Dark Destroyer, fully revived and ready to begin its campaign of universal genocide anew. Though it breaks her heart, Dart must now track down the former members of Atari Force in diaspora, and execute any who are now compromised by this existential threat. However, her partner and lover Cole Cash has his own secret history with extraterrestrial espionage, and both players are in the sights of International Operations!

    I, THE OCCULT #1
    written by BRIAN AZZARELLO
    art by DAVE STOKES
    cover by ROBERT HACK
card stock variant cover by JJ KIRBY
What you saw at the picture show was a feeble fantasy. In you even manage to get close enough to smell the metallic rot of a vampire’s breath so’s to shove a stake through its heart, you might as well toss a toothpick into a lion’s maw while you’re at it. Vampires are pure spirit, souls bound to Satan through witchcraft. The only use for a stake is in turning a corpse downward in its grave– in the daylight, mind– and binding it to the business end of a coffin to keep the bastard from stepping out into the moonlight again… though you really ought to wack the head and empty a can of lighter fluid in there, just to be sure.
Magic paves the road to damnation. You play with his fire, you’ll burn for an eternity. Richard Occult knows all too well that the dark arts must be confronted for G-d’s sake, but the Lord made it clear that a righteous soul doesn’t commune with the supernatural or take up its wicked ways. A “ghost detective” uses the tools He provided to put down werewolves and warlocks like mad dogs in the street. You need blessings and holy objects, but more than that, you need the conviction and faith to use the most basic tools to send these sons of witches back to the hell that spawned them. Keep it simple, show no mercy, and maybe someday you’ll be farting through silken robes in Heaven. But until then, you better be prepared to fight like the devil when you meet one.

THE LORDS OF ORDER & CHAOS #1
    written by RAM V
    art by AHMED RAAFAT
    cover by FELIPE ESCOBAR
This One knows the past. The Lord of Order Nabu the Wise was one of the world’s earliest and most essential judges… a defender of Ancient Egypt. His spirit has lived on across millennia via his golden helm, passed down to his selected successors. Like much of Egyptian heritage, the helm was pillaged and misused abroad. It was for this reason that the conscripted soldiers of the Mamluk were revived in the 1950s… to recapture Egyptian artifacts of power, and to reclaim a just order upon the earth.
This One knows the present. The Fates have proven inadequate time and again in the face of Chaos and the threat of Kali Yuga. Few have fought to the death, instead abandoning their responsibilities. Supposedly, the Fate of World War II has miraculously returned. In fact, there now appear to be multiple helms and nearly as many incarnations of Nabu across the Earths of the Multiverse. This is not Order, and these are not agents of Order.

This One knows the future. He’s not the only one. The Fates of the Multiverse will be stalked and sacrificed for mystical gain. The Sinister Masonry of Eldritch has formed to pillage the world’s magic, and it will take more than a doctor to cure us of them. Spells are one thing, but this is a war, and those are fought by soldiers… knights… mamluks. The true Helm of Nabu must be recovered by any means necessary and at any cost. Armor will be donned, and swords of sorcery drawn.

Khalid is a survivor, smarter and stronger than any since Nabu took human form, and he knows that he will serve as a shining occult warrior until this world goes dark as the flame of humanity is all but extinguished. Above all, Khalid understands, this is his Fate, a duty that he has trained for all of his life as a janissary mage. There can only be this One.

The list of necromancers and demons grows. Neron. Tannarak. Felix Faust. Sethe. Asmodel. Sabbac. The Queen of Fables. And above all, the Dark Lord Mordru. Speak their names, then slay these dragons, before all is Chaos…

    MOURNINGSTAR #5
    written by DAVID BARNETT
    art by ANDREA SORRENTINO
    cover by YILDIRAY ÇINAR
The discovery of the home of retired television reporter Bethany Snow unspools years of deceit surrounding the Church of Blood. Most of the “prophesies” spun around the so-called Azrael involving Trigon were crafted with her input, to sell Brother Blood the VIII’s globally-broadcast resurrection. Bounty insists that he is truly from Starhaven, but carbon-dating on his crashed spaceship places his arrival on Mount Michelson back to at least the 15th Century. So many parodoxes and falsehoods, not the least of which is the immenent arrival of Dawnstar from the 31st Century… except isn’t Bounty the Dawnstar of the 30th?

    RED BEAR #5
    written by PHILLIP KENNEDY JOHNSON
    art by CORY HAMSCHER
    cover by KEVIN MAGUIRE
They all came up from the Lowlies with something to prove to secure their survival. Anglar was a rebel betrayed, who barely cleared an ambush that took all his companions. Buna’s father died to save her life after one failure, and another landed her back in Armagetto. And here was Bear, who according to Topkick still reeked of the New Genesians he ran with in his youth. Topkick had been the elite drill sergeant of the Parademons, and this promotion required him to build or break a troop of Hunger Dogs. Breaking comes easier. Armed only with stun-guns and electri-bolos, the Lowlies must face the Deep Six… but their foes are out of their element in this urban jungle, and Bear has a soul-deep pain that he’d like to share. Written by rising star Phillip Kennedy Johnson (The Last God) with jaw-dropping artwork from Cory Hamscher (Astro City)!

Batwoman, the Superboy, Artemis, XS, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and Aquagirl have each been framed for crimes that logic demands they wouldn’t have committed, but in these trying and suspicious times, has regardless made each persons of interest to the authorities. Of all the threats emboldened by the absence of the JLA, no one expected Dr. Destiny to reform one of the the earliest and least remembered super-villain collectives to implicate the successors of their sworn enemies. Can Kyle clear himself and his fellow legacies before the situation gets any worse?

    cover by SEBASTIAN “GARNABIEL” ESCOBAR
The Guardian variant cover by CHRIS GIARRUSSO
Luthor’s reach outstrips his grasp, as LexCorp’s cruel shuttering of the Daily Planet newspaper triggered a special exemption in the non-competition contracts of their staff. Wayne Enterprises has aggressively moved into the Metropolis market, with WTV News multi-platforming to deliver the Planet’s beloved newspeople to a broader audience than ever before. Perhaps even worse for Luthor, Dick Grayson has also established residence in the Big Apricot. How will Phantom Lad react to the arrival of Nightwing, especially as he struggles with his disconnection from that hero’s namesake Kryptonian demigod?

  2. Thanks for another brilliant episode, Siskoid and Anj. What a gift of an issue, and you two came up with some excellent ideas.

I really like Anj’s notion for a Daily Planet book, it sounds like an update on Mindy Newell’s terrific Lois Lane series (which seemed to take its cues from Lou Grant).
Siskoid’s idea for the Planet is great too, I love the prospect of backmatter articles, just make sure the Answer Man is in there!

Good old Destiny… I bet Anj remembers that time he guested in Superman, before he went Endless. I like Siskoid’s idea for a Kid Destiny, but I shall be upset if you have him editing reality without getting some proper training – it’s a profession, you know!

Anj’s take on a modern Dr Light is great, but as she’s related to Dr Midnite (I do like that US spelling, it’s just so cute), how about spelling it Dr Lite?

I don’t know whether you know, Siskoid, but the Terrible Trio spent about a year plaguing Batgirl recently.

Anj’s Dr Occult take is amazing, especially the idea of an overlap five minutes. Could Dr 13, Ghostbreaker guest star, please?

Dark Opal as pronounced by Anj, appropriately for this episode, sounds like ‘Doc Opal’.

  3. Loved quite a few of these. Of course Doctor Occult is the greatest DC doctor next to Mid-Nite!

Also, I’m surprised Dr. Anj didn’t manage to somehow make these titles revolve around Supergirl.
