This is a terrific episode. I’ve always been interested in Bow, and I’ve seen a couple of her silents, but I really knew nothing about her. Thanks for clarifying that her last two sound films were in fact box office hits. I’ve seen in mentioned in the past that Clara was one of those silent stars who failed to transition to sound, and that’s why she left Hollywood. It’s nice to know that even in the “talkies”, Bow still had IT. 🙂
Hi everybody. I just wanted to jump on and say that I really enjoyed this podcast. I’ve always liked Clara Bow and have a few of her films on DVD. Very well done overview of her career and life.
Yeah I also thought of Margot Robbie’s character in Babylon as soon as you started doing the biography. A coincidence: After I listened to the podcast, my next watch was Center Stage in which Maggie Cheung also plays a silent film star (the real life Ruan Lingyu) with a lot of correspondences with Clara Bow and what you were talking about.
As for The Spirit of the Beehive, what an amazing film. Ana Torrent, the little girl, is also incredibly moving in Cría cuervos… which I will recommend.
