I always felt a connection to the U-Foes. Probably because of the common family surname.
Did Mulder and Scully ever come knocking at your door?
My favorite Tyrannus moment was from Peter David’s Hulk run: Tyrannus had taken to wearing a hooded cloak to keep his face in shadow; as he explained to Betty and Marlo that his eternal youth had worn off, he dramatically revealed his face and bombastically declared “BEHOLD THE FACE OF TYRANNUS!” While the story up to this point had led us to expect an extremely aged face, the unveiling showed that he looked just the same as usual. When Betty and Marlo said they didn’t see anything wrong, he pointed out that he’d gotten wrinkles and crow’s feet, the first signs of aging in his centuries of existence. Betty and Marlo then earned his gratitude by showing him some make-up tips.
A small correction: I was misremembering, and it was Betty and Rick, not Betty and Marlo, in that scene with Tyrannus (in Incredible Hulk Annual #17).
Oddly enough, the U-Foes have never actually fought the Fantastic Four (to the best of my knowledge). I get the feeling that writers might feel it’s too obvious, and Marvel has gone so long without having them meet that no writer wants to be the first to break the streak…
The closest I can recall this happening was when the U-Foes fought the Avengers in #304, when Reed and Sue were on the team. But! They were notably absent from this issue! Their heads are in the corner box, and that’s it!
Since they asked if Ultron has ever been good; one of his incarnations, Ultron-12, eventually evolved past his hatred of Hank Pym and wanted to develop a healthy “father-son” relationship with him. He even decided to take on a human name, calling himself “Mark” from “Ultron Mark 12.” Unfortunately, that didn’t last long before his predecessor Ultron-11, disgusted by his successor’s “weakness,” took him out.
On another note, when the time comes to review the characters’ other looks, I can’t wait to hear the reaction to Ultron’s female incarnation as drawn by Frank Cho…
Tyrannus: Love that look on his face. It just screams “AH-HA!!!”.
U-Foes: If you want a really tragic Fantastic Four analog, check out the Batman Beyond episode “Heroes”. But be sure to be in a good mental state before you hit play. YIKES.
Ulik: Of course the girls hotted him!
Ultimatum: I’m thinking a G.I. Joe or Cobra snow trooper, but I’m an 80s kid, so…
Ultron: I was kinda disappointed that the MCU didn’t more closely follow this classic Ultron head. Good timing with James Spader returning as Ultron in VisionQuest.
Umar: No comments. Just hot!

Umar: With regards to her being Clea’s mother, one interesting aspect of her origin story as told in the 1970s was that Umar had sex ONCE, was disgusted afterwards by the physicality of it, and essentially said “Never again.” That single encounter resulted in Clea’s conception. Umar’s aversion to sex was forgotten by later writers, most notably in the 2005 Defenders mini-series by the “Bwah Ha Ha” JLA creative team of Giffen, DeMatteis, and Maguire. That was a more comedic take on the characters, and included a scene where Umar seduced the Hulk. It turned out that she was so good at it that he turned back into Bruce Banner, and was too satisfied and blissed-out to Hulk out again.
While I enjoyed that series and found that scene amusing, I prefer the concept of Umar being hot but asexual (though I’m not sure whether that’s an accurate label for her).
Apparently Tyrannus is supposed to be an actual historical figure, Romulus, the last Emperor of Rome. (I think having the first and last rulers of Rome both be named Romulus is a little on-the-nose, but I’m not writing history.) The real Romulus was only 15 years old when Rome fell, and King Odoacer of the Ostrogoths, who overthrew him, let him live because of, quote, “his youth and beauty”. He apparently remained on good terms with the conquerors and lived comfortably in retirement.
All the talk of Ironclad’s metallic member is making me wonder if it clangs around the inside of his steel kilt like a bell. Talk about a “dong”…
Fun episode and crazy we are so close to the end.
U-Foes – I still want to call them U.F.O.’s . I do love their story and look as an evil/souped-up FF. We have had a million Batman analogs, why not FF!

Umar is very evil-hot in that Giffen-DeMatteis Defenders comic. She’s the sorcery equivalent of The Baroness.
I did an Ultron jack o’lantern one year, but we can’t find the pictures now. It’s the only time I’ve attempted a really artful jack o’lantern. It was every bit as effective as you guessed!
