On this episode of Peace Bound and Down: A Wonder Woman Podcast, Sean is joined by Alex Orman to discuss issue 13 of volume two of Wonder Woman. It’s the conclusion of the Challenge of the Gods, and Diana learns her ultimate purpose and fate, Hypolita learns the fate of Herakles, and the gods learn the true power of Wonder Woman!

[Comic Book Guy Voice]
I have to stop the episode to comment already–Matt Damon is NOT the guy who f*cked Jimmy Kimmel. Damon f*cked Kimmel’s then gf, Sarah Silverman, as revealed so hilariously on the show.
In retaliation, Kimmel then f*cked BEN AFFLECK, as revealed in a later episode.
You’re an educator, Sean. Facts matter.
Follow up: I finally learned my lesson, but it took a couple trips to Culver’s (which I think is just a regional chain) and getting a milkshake and suffering horrible stomach issues that I just gave up on them entirely.
Also–I would totally be up for a guest spot on the SHUT UP AND READCAST. I know I’ve mentioned this on other shows, in the early 80s my Dad would occasionally go in to the office on Saturdays, and would buy me a bunch of comics which I then sat at his secretary’s desk and read, giving him needed peace and quiet.
Alex was a great guest!
CULVERS! Love Culvers! Make sure you get their punch card because after 10 punches you get an a free angiogram.
And thanks for the thumbs up!
Another fun episode and love these ‘hold the lasso of truth’ stories. This episode’s were particularly compelling. Being on an MTV commercial is hard to beat. But being involved in a drug/satanic/teacher on drugs/tropical storm story beats it … hands down.
I do love the ending of this arc, a triumphant story. And as you say, the Hercules moments are powerful given the grace the Amazons show.
Now on to secret questions –
‘Food issues’ – My girlfriend and i love Indian food and have a place we get takeout from. I really love the lamb vindaloo. If I get it ‘normal spicy’ it isn’t tasty enough for me. If I get it ‘extra spicy’, I love it … but it is like an express train working through my bowels. So whenever we order out, I have to make a value decision. Less satisfying meal? Or ‘there’s an express train coming through’?
Forgive/forget – I have to say I often fine myself in a different place – apathy. For significant issues, I struggle to forgive. But I can say ‘that person no longer matters’ or ‘I can co-exist peacefully’. I don’t think that counts as forgetting.
Bad Girl – there are almost too many for me to list unfortunately.
BG cartoon – Baroness from GI Joe
BG movies – Xenia Onatop from Goldeneye
BG television – Valerie Malone from Beverly Hills 90210 (but frankly anything Tiffany Amber Thiessen is involved in is going to be high on an Anj list).
BG comic – Harley Quinn (preferably in full jester) or (deep cut) Hyathis
Thanks for great show as always Sean!
“kill a hobo” was not on my bing card!
*bingo
It never is…
I mean, we never proved that the hobo was murdered by Damien and his crew. It was almost certainly hobo-on-hobo violence, which sadly occurs all too often. But man, as high-schoolers, we were getting scared sh!tless at all the “coincidental” weirdness building to Halloween night. Fun, crazy times.
Here’s two secret questions yes . Two
It being close to thanks giving which movie would you show to Wonder Woman and her mom and the other amazons to explain American thanks giving, 1 Charlie Brown thanks giving, Alice’s restaurant mascree movie , or the Rugrats thanks giving special .
Who would introduce the amazons to pro wrestling
Which event would have them watch with you , wrestle maina 4 , clash of champions 1 , or ECW the doctor is in .
“this is Rhea Ripley! she’s just like you!”
Typo that should be how
Another fantastic installment, my friends!
How great is this series?? (that’s rhetorical) Any idea why Len Wein stepped away from this book?
So my buddy SeanAZ has a story for every occasion! MTV? Covered! College meet-cutes? Covered! Saved a cat? Probably covered! I’m inviting you to all my dinners (PS, I don’t invite anyone over).
Cool MTV Story though I thought all those 1 800 Collect commercials had Alyssa Milano in them. She was a great bad girl even though Anj is right and you can’t go wrong with Tiffani Amber Thiessen either. I didn’t think Wonder Woman had much to do with Millenium which was a long stupid Green Lantern crossover. Does every body on this network hate Hal Jordan?
Excellent show, Sean and Alex! Sean, I believe you mentioned the symmetry of the arc of the first woman who is murdered in issue #1 being brought to completion w/ Hippolyte’s merciful suffering “for” Heracles when bound together by Diana’s lasso. That has echoes of the Christian notion of Christ as the “Second Adam” who comes to redeem the first Adam (humankind) by graciously suffering with us and reconnecting (or re-binding) us to God. Sorry to get all theological on you, but I am a pastor.
On to the secret questions: Food issues? I’ve been a vegetarian for 30 years or so now, but I remember well a birthday when we went to McDonald’s in the closest larger city about an hour away and I had my first (and only) McRib. Then, we went to an arcade back in my hometown and I started feeling sick. The second that I got home, I quickly darted to the bathroom where I spent most of the night. Whenever they bring the McRib back for a limited time, I can barely watch the commercials.
I am not usually a big fan of the Bad Girls, but I will offer these as favorites: Diamondback from Mark Gruenwald’s Captain America run, The Baroness from GI Joe (as mentioned by Dr. Anj), and Regina aka The Evil Queen played by Lara Parrilla on “Once upon a Time”. My wife has become a fan of the TNT series Leverage and, if she counts as a Bad Girl, the character of Sophie Devereaux as played by Gina Bellman would also make the list. She is a grifter, a thief, and quite beautiful to boot.
Congratulations on the one year anniversary of this podcast! My wife and I still make time to listen together each month.
I am so glad you discussed the Chimera just wandering off to breathe fire at the Harpies, because I was seriously concerned I’d missed something. Now, my no-prize brain immediately tries to explain it, but I shouldn’t have to work that hard. So I take it as unintentionally hilarious instead.
Hippolyte is the standout of this issue. Instead of solely being “the Queen” from pre-Crisis, she’s every bit the warrior that Diana is, but balanced with a superhuman level of compassion. I don’t remember the specifics of next issue, but I hope there will be a reckoning with Heracles in some fashion. But I do have a question. During Marvel’s “Incredible Hercules” run, it was stated the name “Heracles” could be translated as “beloved of Hera”, meaning that in spite of her anger at Zeus’ infidelity, Hera herself was protective of Herc and maybe the trials were a version of “tough love”. Does this hold any water, or was it just artistic license by the writers?
Well, for my podcast, I finally re-read Millennium. I found my physical copies, since DCU Finite is no help. Man, it’s an editorial mess. So I feel for you, Sean. The sacrifices we make for our audience. But I think Diana got more panel count than the Outsiders, so you win on that score.
For some reason, when Sean started talking about “food regrets”, I was thinking of Fuddruckers even though I rarely got their chili fries. I just loved their burgers, and can’t recall being sorry afterwards, so I can’t explain why my thoughts anticipated Sean’s answer! Stay out of my head, Sean! Oh, I guess the closest answer for myself is the years when I would get Taco Bell. Overdoing that could lead to … problems.
Forgive and/or forget. I don’t have much problems with forgiving, and definitely great at forgetting in general, there are a couple of things from when I was really young that still jump up, like when I fell into a pond at a zoo as a kid, just to have a whole crowd laughing at me. But I don’t begrudge those people, how else do you react to something so unexpected? To be honest, my biggest struggle is forgiving myself. I make mistakes, don’t always treat people thoughtfully, basically being a jerk in the moment, and have almost immediate regrets that gnaw at me to this day. Examples are honestly too difficult to explain, so please take my word for it. And like Peter Parker, I don’t seem to learn from them either! Whereas Peter self-deludedly calls it “Parker Luck”, I know I’m at fault. I don’t forget what I did, don’t forgive myself, and don’t seem capable of breaking the cycle. In the last couple of years, I suspect that I’m undiagnosed ADD or ADHD, which wouldn’t really change things at my age, but might be helpful to at least understand myself. And yes, I do appreciate you all calling me a “nice guy”, but that doesn’t erase me being thoughtless at times, so that perception is not universal, trust me. The least I can do, since I can’t fix where I’ve been a jerk, the one bit of grace I can do is forgive others by putting myself in their shoes.
Ok, that’s enough moping! A favorite bad girl has to be Amora the Enchantress. That era when she and Thor were a couple was crazy, but can you blame him? Co-sign me for Diamondback, and Black Cat obviously. But an interesting twist was when Ultimate Spider-Man met that universe’s Black Cat. She was amazing, completely into Peter, but she was an adult and that Peter was still in high school, so when she unmasked him, she ralfed on the spot! Yeah, I thought it hilarious, but poor Peter, that has to hurt your self-esteem.
Great episode as always!
Whew, that lasso of truth is strong stuff. Use with caution, friends.
Alex’s “lasso of truth” story was just amazing! I don’t think any other one can top it or even come close. I really pity the poor sucker who has to try to follow that in the next episode.
Thank you! Yeah, growing up in a small town sometimes gives you the “Whoa! That’s a crazy story!” award.
Forgot comic bad girls. Pretty much the Gotham Girls Harley, Ivy and Catwoman prefer Harley in the Margot Robbie movie costume and Catwoman in the purple dress. Marvel would be the Black Cat and maybe Golden Glider for a deep cut.
