  1. Always a great listen. Nice to hear Shawn and Dan again. Still think Dan sounds like Steve Sands from the Golf Channel. Every time I hear him I want his opinion on a downhill bunker shot.

While this wasn’t one of the best MASH episodes, it’s still better than most shows. Wonderfull send off to Eddie, Rob. You done good.

  2. Dan and Shawn are always awesome guests!

I like how Klinger’s place on the show has gradually elevated, even more so now with Radar gone. Klinger is now capable of being a protagonist in his own subplot, without being limited to schemes to get out of the army.

I loved Charles’s facial expressions while listening to Father Mulcahy’s piano playing. You could see Charles having a short glimmer of hope that then faded away.

  3. Rob, the tribute to your friend was absolutely beautiful, thank you for sharing it with us.

And thanks for a great conversation, all three of you!

I honestly hadn’t watched Private Finance in a long time, so before listening to this, I went back to watch it. I spent a good chunk of it wondering when Charles was gonna start trying to con the locals, because I had it mixed up with Change Day, for some reason… That episode of course happened ages ago, and when I realized my mistake, I had to put myself in time out for a while to think about what I had done. I’m deeply ashamed of my behaviour. So, watching this episode was surprising. 🙂

I agree that it feels very mid… It’s one of those episodes I can see myself put on and just have playing in the background while I do something else, and just glance at every now and then. I don’t necessarily agree that a bad MASH-episode is still better than a lot of other shows, because there are episodes I simply can’t stand.
Had “Bananas, Crackers and Nuts” been the first episode I watched, for example, I would have noped my way out of there and never returned.

I think it has some nice parallels to other episodes, like in “Guerilla my Dreams,”, when Hawkeye (and the others) assume that a wounded is more innocent than they really are. And it also made me think about “Too Many Cooks,” when Margaret is like “no, leave Potter alone,” and then does the exact opposite.
Love how she invites herself to come along, and that Potter just accepts it. Their relationship is so important to me, and it’s always nice for them to go on a side quest together 🙂

I really love that Margaret will have another woman’s back in a second. She has so much trouble relating to the women who serves under her – she turns so hard and so cold to protect them and herself – but she is also right there when a fellow sister needs her. I love that she looks at the picture for so long, and the tears in her eyes after. She just cares so deeply about so many things, and her constant struggle to find a balance between her bleeding heart and her walls made of ice is always a joy to watch.

Maybe I’m doing a Margaret here, and have a strong reaction because I’m a woman, but I really jumped at Potter’s line about Oksun Li beeing a “nice girl”, so she “shouldn’t do things like that”. Like, does her really think that women who have to sell their bodies do it because they’re bad girls? Not just desperate, and forced into doing horrible things to themselves as a last resource?
I find this so interesting, because he’s been in the army for a long time, he must have seen a lot of horrible things, not just out on the fields or in the operating room.
And yet, he seems to have this sort of idealized view of people and the world in some ways, like we see here.
It’s especially interesting in his relationship to Margaret. They both chose the army, but their experiences must have been completely different, where she had to deal with things he obviously is oblivious of. (I’m saying obviously here, because of “Sons and Bowlers” where he suggests that Margaret puts herself in a situation that could potentially be very dangerous for her). We see Margaret being sexually assaulted several times, and it’s adds to the level of threat and terror they are all constantly under.
Speaking of “Bananas, Crackers and Nuts”, for example, she is probably still anxious about getting undressed in the dark, in a way that Potter doesn’t even have to think about. I just find it really interesting how he seems to think about prostitution as something bad girls do, and that good girls can just stay away from by making good choices in life.

I also found the way they talk about Oksun Li’s mom a bit surprising. They refer to her as an older woman, and Potter says “granny” at one point, when she is clearly a lot younger than he is. And I know that Klinger as a character is supposed to be in his late 20s, I think they say 29 at some point of the show, but he looks about her age. It was just a weird choice that stood out to me.

And I of course loved when Father Mulcahy said “Now, let’s pay a little musical call on Marie.” Yes, please do. 🙂 It’s just nice to hear your name mentioned on your favorite show. I think there’s some guy with a tattoo of a Marie in one episode too… I’m sure that’s a very tasteful one… 😀

  4. Way to make me cry while driving – wonderful tribute at the end. And side note, I’m bummed those commentaries are gone.

For some reason, as a kid, this episode scared me a little. That mom definitely seemed angry enough to use that pitchfork, Klinger, you are absolutely in danger!

  5. Iron Guts, another great episode. That was a touching tribute at the end. Please accept my condolences. I hope that Eddie is at peace wherever he is.
