Great show, Sean and Justin! This was a well-done transitional issue. I quite enjoyed the focus on the Olympians in the first several pages and the introduction of Myndi Mayer. Perez did such a great job assembling a supporting cast for Diana, alongside Steve, Etta, and Hippolyta. And I loved the bit where Myndi points out that they need to avoid confusing Diana w/ the “other Princess Diana” and scribbles “Diana Prince” as an option before crossing it out.
My wife (who felt you were a little hard on Julia Kapatelis’ parenting) observed that Vanessa is in a military hospital and there may have been restrictions on who was allowed to be there.
There were some great secret questions in this episode. For starters, I am a HUGE REM fan. I think I’m the same age as you guys and my first album was Life’s Rich Pageant which I received as a Christmas present. I quickly went back and purchased all of their previous recordings. My personal favorite is either Reckoning or Automatic for the People. Favorite songs? That’s difficult. Probably “(Don’t Go Back to) Rockville”, “Fall on Me”, or “Try Not to Breathe”.
Favorite healing moment in fiction? I’m also a big X-Files fan and think the episode “One Breath” (Scully recovers from a coma following her abduction) would be my choice.
And I chuckled at the pronunciations of “prologue” and “epilogue”. When he was a kid, our older son said that something was the “epitome” of something. Only he pronounced it “ep-ee-toam”. But like you said, he was a really voracious reader and loved books that were challenging for his age.
Super Captain,
Thanks for listening! Your wife is right – I was hard on Julia. The military hospital explanation is worthy of a No-Prize!
I love R.E.M. and was thrilled with Justin’s secret question. Your three choices for favorite songs are amongst my favorites as well. Such an incredible and versatile band.
As I listen…
First off, I love the chemistry between you two! You need to bring Justin back, Sean.
My favorite stories about the hero rebuilding: All of James Ellroy’s novels (especially the film and book LA Confidential), Jerry Maguire, Logan, and High Fidelity. You probably notice a type there…
Julia is a horrible mother. You’ll see more of her failings later… Or perhaps (spoiler alert) her daughter just isn’t treated well later in WW’s run.
High Fidelity is a great choice! I love the novel and the movie equally, which is rare for me.
I agree – Justin was a great guest! I will definitely look for chances for us to record together again.
My favorite version of Cheetah is actually… the Priscilla Rich version, but specifically the way Alex Ross redesigned her in JUSTICE, where she sacrificed her Cheetah pets and made her suit out of their skin. The black warpaint running down like tears was another great touch.
I like her Cruella turn as well.
Since you’re the FW Network’s resident music expert, I’d love to hear your favorite R.E.M. songs!
Not much to say good episode
Here’s a secret question:
If Wonder Woman and Miss Martian watched a marathon of sitcoms from our world which show do think they would watch and why ?
Me : I’d think Miss Martian would choose a teen comedy like the many loves of doby Giles and Wonder Woman I could see her watching the Brady bunch or full house .
Weirdly, I think they would love The Golden Girls.
When comes to strange tv shows I like the Gerry Anderson shows like thunder birds , captain scarlet, Joe 90 and the secret service and a like also the monkees tv show . Also I like the Lance lot link episode where he becomes the lone ranger
Great show, Sean and Justin. Perez never ceases to amaze me on this Wonder Woman run. The style, detail, creativity, and sheer epic nature of his art is unparalleled.
Man, the gods are a bunch of jerks. Plus, the gods have clearly revoked the Amazon’s health care plan since their basic answer to healing Diana is doing what I did with my kids to teach them the backstroke.
Love this over-the-top evil version of Cheetah. Great reimagining.
Finally, I agree Julia is a terrible mother, but let’s not forget her mercenary tendencies. Five minutes after finding out her daughter survived, she leaves her bedside to drag Diana to Mindy’s agency. You know Julia is getting beak wet on this publicity tour.
Brett,
“Getting her beak wet” killed me! Poor Vanessa! Oh well, it’s not like she’ll turn into a super-villain or anything……
Together again for the first time, two of my Outcaster alumni! This episode was a treat!
For other “come down” issues, Perez and Busiek did some good ones on their Avengers run as part of membership changes. Maybe team roster stories fall into a different category, but theirs usually invovled more introspection by the heroes rather than simply logistics of “who can we get”.
I do like that we can see the hints of future stories being seeded in this issue. The wandering eye of Zeus, that conniving Pan, outrageous Mindi Mayer, new missions for Steve and Etta, and a new sinister threat. Like you say, this is a fully developed world for Diana and her adventures.
And Mindi! The incredible chutzpah to make an outfit practically the same as Julia. Simply astounding! She’s a great addition to keep Diana on her toes without being a villain.
Oh hey! Speaking of chutzpah. The first time I tried to say that word in a group setting, I utterly butchered it and a proud Jewish woman sternly corrected me. So I’m with you guys on that situation. That’s the last time I tried any word said by Hank (The Beast) McCoy before hearing it aloud!
I’m trying to remember how old Julia is supposed to be. It feels like she’s presented as late-50s to early-60s, which isn’t a problem, but I’d really think mid-40s having a teenage daughter is more average. I can’t recall if this will be addressed later, but we’ll see.
Really looking forward to next issue with Perez drawing cameos of several DC legends! *wink*
Tim!
Thanks for listening and writing in. Yiddish words are always challenging. My favorite Yiddish words are “schlep” (carry) and “agita” (heartburn – physical or metaphysical).
Ooo, those are good ‘uns!
Nice one Sean and Justin on another excellent dissection of the Amazing Amazon. I enjoyed this issue, I’m also a big fan of ‘day in the life’ issues. The most interesting aspect of this issue for me was the introduction of Myndi Mayer, my favourite supporting character of the new run. I loved Myndi’s drab makeover here, but it’s amazing Julia didn’t see right through it and smile… then again, Julia doesn’t seem interested in much outside of her books, the way she ignored Vanessa this issue was nigh unforgivable.
Goodness me that was a very specialised secret question, I couldn’t name three REM songs never mind an album or two. The best song I know is Shiny Happy People.
Sean, your story about the Mad Juicer was a hoot. Fifth and sixth graders are 11-12? As for what Justin was saying about kids having a favourite urinal, that’s pretty common if there are just three in a row – it would be one that’s not the middle. Young lads are shy.
Sean, have you tried Fry’s Turkish Delight? They’re covered in proper milk chocolate, occasionally you can also get a lemon version, lovely.
It’s funny that you were talking about words and names being mispronounced, I loved Justin’s X’hal as Exhale – deliberate?
My favourite TV ‘bad mom’ is Peggy Bundy from Married With Children, she was a hoot.
I’d not heard of shoefly pie. It sounds interesting, even if I can’t figure how syrup stays in pastry. The name reminds me of Scotland’s fly cemetery, though rather than molasses, it’s crushed currants in pastry… where I’m from we call it sly cake.
Martin,
Thanks for writing in! I’m glad you like the “Tale of the Mad Duecer”. I actually saw a friend I taught with at that time recently and we recounted the story yet again. The funniest thing about that story is that the Duecer woukd now be about 27. I wonder if he still dons the cape? 🙂
Not ‘juicer’ but ‘duecer’? I can’t find a definition for the latter word online, help!
“Duece” is slang for pooping. (I can’t believe I just typed that sentence.)
Hi Sean:
Loving the podcast! So nice to see Wonder Woman getting a bit of attention. You might say that George Perez and Wonder Woman are responsible for my life-long love of comic books – but probably not in the way you think. I was a huge fan of Crisis on Infinite Earths and got in on the ground floor during the post-Crisis Perez run on Wonder Woman. I still remember picking up that amazing first issue with such excitement and being amazed! Although, I have to disagree with you. The cover is amazing, but for my money, it’s the only the third best Perez Wonder Woman cover. Just wait until you get to the AMAZING gatefold cover to issue number 10!
However, my vote for the best-ever Perez Wonder Woman cover is also the first ever comic I owned – gifted to me by my Aunt and her boyfriend in 1981 when I was nine years old… Wonder Woman #284.
It’s George Perez’s second-ever Wonder Woman cover and it’s an AMAZING shot of her on the back of a giant red dragon pounding the hell out of it. I can remember just soaking it all in and staring at it for HOURS. The story where Wonder Woman goes to China in issues 284 and 285 have stuck with me my whole life and I’d love to have you cover them on your podcast at some point. Oh, and the Huntress back-up story left me with SO many questions… Batman was dead? What?!
My own “Lasso of Truth” confession is that when I was 10 or 11 I practically BEGGED my parents to buy me a Wonder Woman doll. It never occurred me until just a few years ago what it must’ve been for my parents to buy their son a “Wonder Woman Barbie” in 1982. I never gave it a second though… I already had the large Meego Superman, Batman and Robin “action figures”… so Wonder Woman was the next logical Superfriend to add to my collection. I remember spinning that doll again and again, but for the life of me I couldn’t get her clothes to change. 🙂
Anyway after a long hiatus (basically from the second year of “New 52” until the start of “Dawn of DC”) I’ve revived my comic collection and starting listening to “Bronze/Early Post Crisis” DC-focused podcasts. It was great to finally find one that wasn’t about 10-15 years out of date so I could contribute some comments and feedback. Looking forward to hearing more!
Greg,
Thank you so much for listening and for taking the time to write in! Hearing from listeners, especially a new listener, makes my day!
You are absolutely right about the gatefold cover for issue 10 – it is magnificent!
I LOVE your lasso of truth story! It makes total sense to want a Wonder Woman action figure to go along with your others, especially if they are Megos, but I can imagine your parents had a fun conversation that day.
Thanks for writing in!
Sean
