Dear Paul and Shawn,
Sorry I’m late to the reunion, but things have been absolutely bat-bonkers since the last Batman Family Reunion. Aunt Harriet was kidnapped!!! Turns out two of the Bat-Uncles were secretly supervillains and part of some secret society. Batman was in outer space with the Justice League, so I had to call on two old Bat-Uncles for help. One was Earth – 2 Robin and the other was the love child of Roy Thomas and Max Allan Collins. They were both really bizarre. One kept babbling about not slapping Batman and the other was obsessed with stealing hubcaps. But, these wild and crazy Bat-Uncles rose to the occasion and saved the day.
Bruce Wayne was so happy that he is letting these two Bat-Uncles run the next family reunion. These two wild and crazy guys know how to party. First, to kick things off, they’re going to hold the first few family reunions weekly. Second, they’re inviting Superman to the reunion!!!! How can you top that?
Gotta go, the first of these new reunions is about to begin and I don’t want to miss it. The music is incredible and I hear that Solomon Grundy and the Gentleman Ghost may stop by for a visit.
All my best,
James Williams
I would take offense to Roy Thomas’ love child, but he’d probably take credit for creating this podcast.
Well then he could take credit for at least co-creating YOU! But he’d probably say it was his initial idea.
Fantastic first episode of Knightcast: Born Again! So happy that 2 friends are talking about 2 other friends: Batman and Superman!
And I agree – it would have been amazing to have seen what Mark Waid could have done over the last 20 years at DC. His love of the characters and the world just shines through. He doesn’t always hit (see Underworld Unleashed and even the more recent Absolute Power) but man does he understand the characters.
And if remember correctly, the first issue of Superman/Batman post crisis also had Metallo and Superman getting shot with a Kryptonite bullet. I think Waid must have been influenced by that too.
I am just so happy that you guys are back finding your joy!
PS James – you cracked me up!
Chris and Ryan,
I am so damn happy to have this show back and even happier that you are discussing the best comic series of the past 3 years. Waid and Mora are freaking gold.
Like you, I love the bold choice to make Bats and Superman actual friends and to have Bruce’s superpower not be superdickery. The DC Universe is a better place when they are buddies.
I also loved your point about Robin being the third member of the World’s Finest. Dick Grayson is the greatest character in comics and it’s wonderful to see him as Robin again.
Come for the issue review, stay for the Batman Therapy session!
You guys were practically giddy at the top of the show, I can only assume it was the years of pent up frustration not being able to talk about Batman comics you enjoy,
And appreciate all the audio cues, way to go the extra mile (I assume) Ryan!
Listened to first episode of the reboot .
Can’t wait for the next episode.
Here my secret question: Jimmy has had a lot of transformations which do you believe is best one ?
I want to say when Jimmy turned into the Wolfman… but the real answer is when he got fat.
I wrote 75 pieces on Jimmy, covering every version of him (transformations and other things), so here’s what people have to pick from: https://siskoid.blogspot.com/search/label/Jimmy%20Olsen
But it’s gotta be Turtle Boy, that’s the iconic one. As this edition of Knighcast is bound to be.
The Turtle Boy look is on the cover of the DC’s Finest collection, so yeah, that’s *the* iconic change as you say.
I’m swooning! So glad you guys are back. I need to read this WF comics, don’t I?
Welcome back, lads. It’s great to hear you both in perky mode. I’ve been a big fan of the World’s Finest series from the off, reviewing most issues, I’m so looking forward to hearing you talk Supergirl as she joins the adventure. I did enjoy the Doom Patrol appearance, but for goodness’ sake Mark Waid, you needed someone with experience in strange transformations in a Superman comic and didn’t give us Professor Phineas Potter… I mean, when did that fruit loop Niles Caulder ever successfully change anyone back to normal?
I laughed when Chris very reasonably said he couldn’t see why Rita was considered a freak, and Ryan said, ‘it’s a stretch’.
‘It tickles’ was mocked by Superboy Prime in Infinite Crisis.
What was that ‘check yourself before you wreck the whole damn block’ reference to? I did Google, it may be something to do with a rapper named Ice Cube or T or whoever.
Welcome back to DC comics Ryan, I loved hearing about how you’re sharing stories with Rhys… has he tried Scooby-Doo Team-Up? And does Angela have an equivalent interest she’s sharing with the wee fella?
Second the Scooby Doo Team Up stories and the Scooby Doo / Batman series. I have read them all and enjoyed them, and have bought a number of trades to save to give to grandchildren (when and if they ever show up, lol).
Whew! It’s been a busy week, but I finally got thru the first episode of Knightcast Returns Begins! It is such a joy to you both rediscovering your love of comics with new series like B/S:WF, or bizwif as the Australian kids say. I’ve been reading the series from the start and it continues to deliver everything you say from the first issue. So good.
But here’s a thing for me. I’m reading it digitally on DCU-I-U-I-O, and if I had bought it physically, I would have re-read each arc when it completes. But I haven’t found the time to do that, and I’m not sure if it’s because they’re digital or if I simply don’t have time anymore. That second read really cements the issues into long-term memory, so I feel like a lapsed fan not doing so. Am I alone in this?
Your show is just what I need for an excuse to give these issues the re-read they deserve. Just not … this week. UGH!
Anyways, thanks for the great episode, guys! I can’t wait for the next one—* It’s already out?! DAH!!
