Great episode! But with the F&W all-star guest Dr. Anj, how could it be otherwise?!?
Specifically about Dan Mora’s Supergirl – I love it as well. Maybe my favorite character design he draws in this comic.
And please – no more said about Comet the Super Horse! When I was a kid I was completely grossed out by that and Supergirl kissing a horse. As an adult it doesn’t get any better. Yuk!
Best image though was the image of Rhys loving the Superman Batman GL merge! Ah to be that age again!! Good parenting by you Ryan!
Oh, and blue shirt and red skirt all the way.
Loved the episode, thank you. This series is one of the very few contemporary DC comics I’ve read in the past decade, and your insightful commentary (and sundry recommendations) is inspiring me to read more. Good thing DC Universe Infinite has a “To Read” list!
Chris, you beat me to the punch: As soon as Anj mentioned wanting to see Killer Moth in live action, I wanted to speak up about that Batgirl promo video featuring a discount-store version of the villain (played by Tim Herbert, who appeared in Soylent Green and The Boston Stranger, among a lot of other films and TV shows). Seriously, he might take the cake as worst-looking villain in all the Adam West Bat-verse—he makes the Bookworm and the Minstrel look dignified. I’d love to see the Moth in modern live action, there’s a lot to play with there: He’s been depicted as a weirdo badass, an insecure loser, and even the first of the many “anti-Batmen” (in his debut appearance, he distributed “Moth-Signals” to crooks so he could come help them when they’re in danger). A skillful screenwriter could make a great story using any or all of those concepts.
I have trouble distinguishing all the various Supergirl costumes, though I’ll always remember the Crisis-era headband, and I’m suitably grossed out when she wears what amounts to a low-cut miniskirt (I’m remembering a house ad from the early 2000s in which you could literally tell that she shaves in a certain sensitive area). Mora depicts her perfectly: Both ass-kicking and cute, in equal measure. (Though he makes all women look cute, if I must say; his Rita Farr is my new comics crush.)
The Super Bat-Lantern is indeed awesome looking. Hey, remember the “Speeding Bullets” Elseworlds story, in which Kal-El’s rocket is found by the Waynes and he ends up becoming a super-powered Batman? I always liked that costume, though it’s a much darker take than this one. Wouldn’t mind seeing that version popping up again (or has it already?).
Great show, guys! I don’t have a lot to add other than I agree with the general assessment of Tom King’s work. The Bilquis Evely art was beautiful, though. I am also really enjoying the new Sophie Campbell Supergirl series.
As far as live-action Superman villains, Brainiac is the obvious choice, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a film w/ Mr. Mxyzptlk involved in some way, either as main antagonist or general nuisance. Not to mention Metallo and Terra-Man.
I’m a big Jeremy Adams fan and he would be at the top of my list as far as dream writers for Superman. I don’t share Chuck Dixon’s politics, but the guy did write some of my favorite Bat-family books ever. A Dixon run on Superman in the 90s or done in his 90s style would be fun too.
Dont like Hal being mind controled
There was a comment about folks not being okay with Kyle Rayner’s will being overpowered by Deathstroke, while the basic consensus was that it was okay to have Hal’s willpower overcome if Superman and Batman joined their wills together. While I can concede a certain logic to this opinion, I’m not sure I agree. While I have no doubt that Kyle’s willpower is generally strong, once one accepts that Kyle wasn’t really chosen to be a Green Lantern *because* of his willpower in the same way that most other Lanterns are, I don’t see it being too much of a stretch to suggest that Deathstroke (who’s known to have more use of his brain… and from here I extrapolate willpower… than most people) could overcome him, even if such a feat might well be beyond the abilities of most others.
(As a counterpoint, I concede that Kyle had already been Ion by this point, which suggests that Kyle is something special even among Green Lanterns, but since you guys have already argued that Hal’s willpower is the strongest, I’ll just leave this as a point for further dialogue.)
Wow that comic looks like something else .
Song of the day : kryptonite by 3 door down I think is the name of band .
Great show, guys. Who is this Anj fellow? Haven’t heard him before.
Good discussion on Tom King stories. I’m hit or miss on him. Most of his 12 issue runs are fine by themselves but I don’t think of these stories being part of regular canon, except maybe Darkseid enjoying a crudité. I do highly recommend his Superman story “Up in the Sky” that was collected. It’s a wonderful tribute to the Man of Steel.
I LOVED the Superman/Batman/GL amalgamation. Such a cool design by Mora.
Thanks for playing my Fantastic Pour promo and then evening it out by dissing my sports references. Didn’t everyone like Anj and me going on and on about football and baseball?
