  1. I haven’t watched this episode yet, but when you said he looked like Reagan, I looked at some images online, and I immediately recognized Bryan Clark as the spokespoerson for Folger’s coffee when I was a kid. He was the guy who would say “We replaced the coffee in this five-star restaurant with Folger’s…”. I can still hear his voice in my head!

I think “The Auto Show” was kind of an analogy for hitting the skids at the time. When The Simpsons went to the Auto Show and met Adam West around this same time, it was portrayed as kind of sad. And many older celebrities were doing that before conventions really took off and became more pop culture-centric.

  2. This is the best of the three episodes so far this season. In some ways it feels like a season premiere because it resets the status quo going forward, with Rebecca working at the bar again for the rest of the series.

It is funny that Sam needs a manager even though he ran the bar himself the first five seasons. I guess it could be partly due to technological changes, but also Sam seems to have lost a few IQ points since the Diane years!

The auto show scenes stand out in my memory from when I saw the episode in 1990. I always seem to forget Earl, but he’s probably the funniest part of the episode!

The auto show in Detroit lasts about a week, so that tracks with the Boston auto show lasting multiple days.

    1. That’s a good point about this episode feeling like the season premiere, as it’s the first episode that really advances the story for Sam and Rebecca.
