Great discussion. From watching along with the podcast, I’m pretty sure this was the first time we had an on-location-in-Boston scene outside the bar for the teaser, which, as you noted, will occur several times for the last three seasons. I think the one of Sam telling his tale of woe was in the final season because he referred to Rebecca burning down the bar. But who knows, my memory has been wrong before!
I agree this is a strong episode. I distinctly remember enjoying this episode in college when it originally aired, and one of my roommates asked me why I was “laughing at all the obvious jokes.” I’m glad to hear you both think it’s one of the funniest episodes, so 35 years later I know that I was right and my roommate was wrong. That was back before we had the expression, “Don’t yuck my yum!”
Yeah, this one kicks off a string of teasers set right outside the bar that happen over the next few episodes.
Bringing in Henri as Woody’s antagonist was brilliant. Previously, there’s been friction between Woody and Kelly’s father, but that developed into more of Kelly rebelling against her father, giving Woody and Kelly common ground. Instead, Henri is a divisive factor, and that’s more interesting to watch and gives more humor opportunities. I love this part.
I couldn’t agree more how funny this episode is. Sam’s “Woody is my best friend, but that is a real compelling argument.” Woody’s “What is ‘back of the barn’?” riff, where it’s almost like Ted and Woody are lost in the moment for a few seconds longer than they’re meant to be, maybe even covering until one of them remembers the next line, and it was so brilliant the editors kept it in. Simply amazing.
