Great discussion. I agree the B story of Frasier reading Dickens stories to the bar is the most memorable part of the episode. It occurred to me that Frasier making up the subtitle The Wrath of Fagin is implicitly referring to The Wrath of Khan, which costarred Kirstie Alley. Sort of similar to the reference to that movie in which Ted Danson appeared that you mentioned (with which I am unfortunately not familiar). Frasier has been the King of the B Plots the last few episodes, with his Dickens stories and his singing!
I vaguely remember some criticism, even in 1991, to the ending of the A plot with Sam. Of course, this was before the internet and social media. I can’t remember if this reaction was in the national media or more likely at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where I was in my final undergraduate semester at the time and taking a sociology class. I agree that, in retrospect, the ending is not great but could have been worse. It seems like Sam has regressed a little bit from the season one episode you mentioned.
