It seems like in Season 9 the writers developed this new theme of Sam acting like a jackass with Rebecca, which we never really saw before. I think there were some new writers this season, but also now that Sam and Rebecca have slept together, we no longer have the sexual tension that existed in Seasons 6, 7, and 8 where Sam was trying to get Rebecca into bed. Therefore, to generate some kind of conflict, the writers came up with the idea of Sam mocking Rebecca’s business ideas and then her making him look foolish in the end. Fortunately, I don’t think this theme really continues much into Seasons 10 and 11.
With that big hole in the wall in the pool room, it reminded me again of how Harry the Hat could come and go through the pool room without explanation. I rewatched the season one episode Pick a Con … Any Con, where Harry emerges from the pool room after leaving the bar. Then I relistened to your podcast on that episode and you mentioned the teaser for The Boys in the Bar, where Sam asked Harry how he got into the pool room, Harry said he came in through the back door, Sam said we don’t have a back door, and Harry said well then that’s my secret. So I watched that teaser too. I still like the idea that there’s an old stairwell or elevator from Melville’s, which explains why Melville’s owned the pool room.
Yeah, you’re right that the weird pseudo-business rivalry between Sam and Rebecca for a couple episodes feels like the writers trying to stir up a new dynamic now that the couple has slept together.
