  1. maybe gentleman ghost is NOT a ghost
    A they knock him out
B WOULD’NT GREEN Lantren just suck him into the ring like ghost busters?

    1. A. Good point.
      B. If he did that, some Oan beuracrat would shut down the central power battery, release all the ghosts, and then you got dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria.

  2. So great to have the Captain back to finish this storyline! He’s always such a good guest, so I’m glad to hear him before … the … series … ends?! WAAAAAHHH!! (sorry, sorry, I’m ok)

Yes, Craddock is a ghost, so how does he do *any* of the things he does? Because he can. So how does GL knock him out? Because he can. Or less esoteric, he has ghost arms and ghost legs, so GL shook his ghost brain and gave GG a ghost concussion. He better not ghost sleep or he’ll have ghost complications.

When it comes to weight lifting for women, I’ve known several thru the local YMCA during my time teaching group fitness. Quite a few are amazingly ripped and not bulked up. I’ll tell you, a muscular healthy woman is tons sexier than model with sticks for arms and legs. Or have I said too much. But to be honest the other way, I cannot bulk up to save me. Everything I do just makes me lean, so I’ve accepted I will not have Captain America’s biceps. 🙂

It’s not stated in the show, but there may be precedent for Vixen’s powers to make her think like the animal she manifests over time, so she wouldn’t want to channel a particular animal when she doesn’t have to. That seems like a common limitation for most animal-based characters. Probably a stretch, but I’m also fine with her not wanting the animal’s senses all the time. “Do you know how bad you all smell?”

For the reincarnation, remember the most important rule. They must look alike! Even though genetics make that nigh impossible, it’s the central requirement! Lucky for the human Carter that he looks just like a long gone Thanagarian! Because sure!

This story was all about the misdirect. I absolutely did not see Shadow Thief as coming from Hawkman when I first watched it, since the story did an excellent job leading me to a different conclusion, and the voice actor was wonderful in both roles. Just a perfect twist to conclude this arc.

That’s all for now. Thank you, Franklins! Looking forward to the … next to last … episode! WAAAAAHHH!!!!!

    1. If Vixen kept her animal powers “on” and had super-sense of smell, she probably wouldn’t have survived “Hunter’s Moon”. I imagine Viglilante’s cowboy boots have some cow pattie remnants (runs from Ranger Gord).

Good point on the genetic angle of reincarnation. I just accept it because of Dark Shadows!

And don’t cry too hard, Tim. While our coverage of Justice League Unlimited episodes will end with “Destroyer”, we still have a few wrap-up episodes that will come out in the fall, after House of Franklin-Stein on Super Mates.

    2. Thanks, Tim! Glad you enjoyed it! Means a lot coming from an accomplished podcrasher and podcaster.

  3. It really frosts my Nth Metal when Batman bogarts a villain from another hero–come on, Bruce, don’t you have enough of a rogues gallery?!?

I’ve always loved the Hawks, and while it’s a different version on display in the cartoon, happy to see them get a spotlight. Same thing can be said for Captain Entropy!

    1. My guess is Len Wein really wanted to write Gentelman Ghost, but didn’t have access to Hawkman, who didn’t have a strip at the time. So he just used him in Batman!

Luckily Captain Entropy isn’t probelmatic in any iteration!

    2. All you network-founding All-Stars are so gracious and kind, no matter what Brett and Sean say!

  4. I first discovered Gentleman Ghost on Super Friends, but Batman 310 made me a fan. I still love that issue and the cover. Heck, I love the entire Wein/Novick run. Look at it like this. Hawkman didn’t have a comic at the time. Plus, Gentleman Ghost was kind of a gateway drug. Batman made me a Gentleman Ghost fan, so the first Hawkman back issues I bought were ones featuring the Gentleman Ghost. See, led to me getting some Hawkman comics.

I don’t know that any of the featured Justice League members, other than maybe Vixen, come off looking to good in this episode. I hate that Hawkman was portrayed as such a creepy stalker. TV/Movies really impact a lot of the general audiences’ perceptions of comics/literary characters and may prevent someone from trying Hawkman’s comics. The example I always use : I absolutely ADORE Modesty Blaise. My first exposure to her was in a novel, and that led me to try the comics when I finally got the chance. If I had seen the godawful in-name-only Modesty Blaise movie from the 1960s first, I never would have tried one of the novels.

Hawkgirl doesn’t really come off well either, since she won’t let John go. Maybe if Hawkman had been presented as so creepy, he would have been a suitable replacement. Since I grew up with the Hawks as a couple, I was rooting for them to wind up together on JLU. Plus, you know, John cheated with his best friend’s girl…even if it was his past self. Are they actually the same person? Who knows?

Finally, I’m the exact opposite of Cindy in that all of my friends are ladies. My group recently met Maria Canals-Barrera at a convention, and she asked me which member of the group was my wife. I said “None. I’m in all of their friend zones.” I pasted a JLGL pic of Hawkgirl from the style guide and a pic of Maria together, and printed it for her to sign. Hey, I think Maria is very pretty, so I didn’t just want her to sign something Hawkgirl. Maria photographed every item she signed. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a celebrity do that. Maria was very nice, though.

    1. Good point about GG’s Batman connection leading back to Hawkman. Maybe it did make some other kids dig though some back issues.

If this was anyone’s first exposure to Hakwman, yes, I can see that it could taint the experience. But honestly, post 1988 or so, Hawkman is pretty much a mess in one way or another anyhow. I think all the radioactive mess around him allowed the creators to feel free to go this direction with him. And no one at DC objected, as opposed to using the JSA like they had planned in “Legends”.

I’m normally a Hakwman/Hawkgirl guy, but on here, I’m always rooting for her and John. Yes, Bashari stole his best friend’s girl, but they are apparently REALLY destined to be together…even if John is too pig-headed to notice!

That’s a great story about meeting Maria Canals-Barrera. I should mention the Barrera in the credits, but she was just Canals then. My kids grew up watching Wizards of Waverly Place, so I agree, she’s very pretty and charming. I would probably opt for a headshot or like something you did too! I hope to meet her someday.

  5. I really haven’t posted a lot lately. I’m not sure how much I can add to what you’ve all already said. I never really paid attention to the credits growing up. I was always more of a story than an art man. But your discussion with John’s refusal to accept reality reminded me of Alan Moore’s Twilight of the Gods.

At least part of what caused the dystopia in that series was when Ephiphany felt slighted after John Constantine refused to give her a light for her cigarette. She felt disrespected and vowed revenge. Hoping to mitigate his part in the past, an aging Constantine time travels and tells his younger self to befriend her. The younger Constantine refuses to give her a light when she arrives because nobody tells him what to do, not even him.

Speaking of Moore, he was asked in an interview, which story he regretted writing most. He replied that it was the Watchmen. But not because of the way DC treated him over the rights. It was because lesser hacks were using it as permission to butcher characters for no reason

    1. I didn’t realize that was the hook of Twilight of the Gods’ story. I could never get past the incest thing with Captain and Mary Marvel. Yuck.

I bet Frank Miller and Moore/Gibbons have quite a bit of regret about making deconstructionism a thing in super hero comics. Because few could do it as well, and didn’t realize it was meant to be a singluar, special story. Not the new direction for the genre.

  6. Great show, Cindy, Chris, and Cap. I’ve always been a Gentleman Ghost fan. First, he clearly has manners, it’s in the name. Second, a top hat and monocle always works for a smug villain. Throw in a cane and cloak and you’ve got yourself a cool-ass bad guy. It’s like if Scrooge died at a younger age and became an evil ghost who didn’t change his ways! There’s a reason this guy makes the rounds in DC animation. I hope he’s part of James Gunn’s DCU.

    1. Oh man, I’d love to see Gentleman Ghost in the new DC Studios universe! He’d be a great addition to the Creature Commandos, for instance. We’d never hear the end of it from him, though…
