10 years later… I agree with Shagg’s perspective on Batgirl and the New 52 reboot. Babs returning to the cowl but the Killing Joke staying in continuity due to Batman’s past not getting reset undercut all the Bat Family. Ryan’s argument that he thinks the “classic” characters being Hal as Green Lantern, Barry as Flash, Dick as Robin, and Barbara as Batgirl as a natural reason she should head the New 52 Batgirl title doesn’t hold water because Dick stayed Nightwing. Barbara going though the tragedy of being shot and sexually assaulted without keeping Ostrander & Yale’s emotional rebuilding of the character into Oracle weakened the character. And Gail Simone’s run was hampered by that and editorial constraints. DC tried to have their cake and eat it too. And we readers lost because of it.
