  1. Great episode this week! I’ve never read that comic book story. They sure had Superman do some crazy stuff in the 60s and early 70s. Yeah, like you, I choose to believe Superman’s mind was somehow taken over, even though it was never said so.

It was interesting hearing the background about how Cary Bates began his career by submitting ideas to DC Comics when he was young. I started reading Superman and Action Comics regularly in the late 70s after seeing the first Christopher Reeve movie, and Cary Bates was one of the first writers’ names I remember learning. I associate Bates in my mind with the period when Clark and Lana were co-anchors on the WGBS nightly news, though it sounds like his career spanned a long period of time.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to the next episode!

    1. Thanks for listening Mike. I want to believe Superman was being influenced by the ghost…but there’s nothing in the story to point to that, unfortunately.

Bates had a long tenure with the Man of Steel for sure, and was definitely one of the main scribes of the Bronze Age. Of course he had a long run on The Flash too, so he was quite prolific at DC in the 70s and 80s!

  2. I’m probably in the minority as Joanna Lumley is Sapphire from Sapphire & Steel to me. I never really glommed onto AbFab like many of my peers, possibly due to me being exclusively Science Fiction / Fantasy / Comics at that point in my life for anything from British TV.

Managed to miss Corpse Bride as well! Will try to hunt it down, as it sounds interesting to me now given my return to reading & writing interests in folk tales / fairy tales / fables / horror and the like.

The Spectre Suitor — I shall give it a quick read through some online sources and return with my comments.

    1. I should have mentioned Saphire & Steel, because I’m aware of it, even though I’ve never actually watched it. It’s just never been readily available to me.

Corpse Bride is a great way to spend a little less than two hours during Spooky Season! As you can tell we highly recommend it!

  3. I have never seen CORPSE BRIDE–it came, IIRC, during Burton’s run of Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd, the POTA remake, and I ehhh on his movies, and this just looked like an animated version of those tropes. But what a cast! Since you spoke so highly of it, I should give it a chance.

I had that Superman vs the Supernatural digest (how did DC never do a “Batman vs,..” one?) and those panels you posted of Superman about to backhand Lois are something. Makes think how accidentally funnier the story would have been if drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger! Overall a nice obscure find for the comic portion of the show.

Can’t believe you’re already up to the last HOF of the season. I feel like you just started!

    1. I personally like it better when Burton stays in his kooky spooky world, but either way, I think Corpse Bride can be appreciated for its artistry and technical achievement alone, and of course that great cast you mentioned!

I kept hoping they’d do a “Batman vs. The Supernatural” digest too, but then DC got into rotating Superman and Funny Stuff books, which to me was the beginning of the end of the digests. I love Superman, but missed that variety. If Schaffenberger had drawn that panel…hoo boy!

Yep, one more episode to go! But we go out with a bloody bang!

  4. Ok, so I have seen Corpse Bride and enjoyed it. And Chris, you are not the only one whose mind defaults to “They Don’t Know” whenever Tracey Ullman pops up. Love that song and the video w/ McCartney is fun too.

And Superman threatening to smack Lois? Wow. I know that Batman threatened to spank Catwoman and actually did slap Robin silly in that one famous meme-fied panel but I like to hold the Man of Steel to a higher standard.

And BTW, my wife and I have started watching Universal’s “The Invisible Woman”. Definitely not what we were expecting after the first two Invisible Man films.

    1. I forgot about the McCartney part! I need to find the video on YouTube and show Cindy.

Yeah, the potential Super-slap is shocking. At least the meme Bat-slap is from an “Imaginary Story”.

The Invisible Man franchise goes in some truly bonkers directions for sure. Moreso than any other Universal series.
