So glad this is back!
Awesome! Just awesome.
Love this is back! Jealous of the guests!
Interesting to see the rules change with revamps/replacement pages of heroes. No Batman! Fascinating.
I have to say the two books that grabbed me were Doug’s Atmos book (brilliant) and Siskoid’s Captain ‘Thunder’. Both brilliant.
As always, I like to come up with my own single book here in the comics.
ATMOS … FEAR by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Riccardo Federici
Reuniting the ‘Last God’ and ‘Superman Warworld’ creative team. In the future, Atmos was killed by the Dominator created BION robot. Resurrected by Naltorian science, the re-awakened Atmos continues to feel the reverberations of his death. He is filled with dread that he will die again, interfering with his drive to help people and be a hero. To help overcome this fear, Atmos travels through time and space to meet heroes who have gone through death and resurrection, learning from them and joining in adventures.
Think about it like DCCP or B&B but only with heroes who have died and come back (a very very very long list). I think it could lean into mature themes or vertigo-esque themes. I like the idea of a team-up book to investigate the corners and history of DC. And I had to play on the ‘atmosphere’ pun somewhere.
So glad this is back!
Haha, I think it’s perfect that you would pitch a terrible dad joke title on the episode Doug was a part of!
Thanks for having me on Siskoid it was fantastic fun!
Top marks for the Title there Dr Anj! I had tried to come up with an Atmosphere jog – almost had Atmos spear of destiny as a title but decided I couldn’t push it too far.
I also had a wild Blue Beatle Book where post WW2 baby boomer Ted Kord was staying with his family in Germany building all these new Kord Industrial plants and during the summer of 61 the young 15 year old was hanging around in Hamburg bars, where he’d get to show off his piano lessons and fell in with Paul , John , George, Stuart and Pete becoming an unofficial 6th Beatle. However when the lads went back to Liverpool Ted had to stay behind as he was in international school in Hamburg and then shipped back to the states. After missing out on stardom (but still super wealthy thanks to his family) he became “Blue” and ended up crime fighting due to seeing all the mafia and corruption on the docks of post war Hamburg… However while the name worked I couldn’t figure out anything other than the origin. It’s been bugging me since…..
I’m not sure I like the truncated version of Who’s Editing. Half the fun of listening to the show is listening to you come up with 30 or so new concepts. Still, it was a fun listen either way. Since you asked for listener suggestions, here are mine.
Booster Gold: a more serious take. He is Dean of the Time Acadamy, in charge of training future Linear Men. Trixie, Michelle, Dirk and Skeets are all part of the faculty. Most of the series is driven when some of the over eager students decide to go on an unauthorised field trip. Its up to Booster and the Faculty to set things right.
The students can be either new characters; or we can do a really deep dive and go all the way back to Bobby and Binks from 1936 More Fun Comics.
Batgirl as a horror series. Young impoverised girl with a talent for science falls under the spell of an industrialist who sees “something special” in her. He becomes her mentor, employer, and eventual lover. After a while she discovers some of his employees have been expermenting on humans using bat DNA. After rushing to tell her boyfriend, he drugs her and admits he not only knows, but authorised the project.
She reacts badly to the serum and appears to die. He discards her with the rest of his failed experments in a nearby toxic dump. And that should be the end of her except that in the dump she goes through a metamorphises. She rises, but what is she: human, bat, both, or something entirely new.
For my villain: Catalyst. An alien runaway from Ventura, the gamblers planet. She carries the Luck Gene, which causes bystanders to have unexpected luck Either good or bad, she never knows which. She tries to make a new life for herself on an alien world, while trying to stay one step ahead of those who wish to drag her back to Ventura for their own selfish reasons.
This was by far the shortest it’s going to be. Most issues have 14+ characters, which is comparable to the original sequence.
Glad this show is back, but is there any chance of going back to the “full” format of the previous incarnation?
None. Future issues are much more loaded and you won’t notice.
As an example, I am only cutting 3 heroes from issue 2, and 2 of those (or the same one twice) will still get a book!
Great episode! Glad this show is back. I like the new rules. I think my favorite this episode so Batgirl but there were several others I am sure I would enjoy!
You will read Bloodsport and you will like it!!!
Batgirl doesn’t have a great rogues’ gallery, Doug? It’s like you’ve never come across Lady Viper and Velvet Tiger!
Welcome back Siskoid, and could you have a better guest than Doug? I commend you both on having your imagination sparked by possibly the worst overall collection of characters this side of The Omega Men. I’ve been trying to come up with something, anything, but what is there?
Catalyst – notes down all the felines he comes across. Blackguard – punches everyone who mispronounces his name. Ares – sentient Greek backside… oh hang on, where’s my spellcheck?
Velvet Tiger, appearing now in Birds of Prey!
I’m off!
I thought Lady Viper was one of the Hydra lot? Or was that a Cobra member who fought Lady Jaye from Action Force ?
As for a better guest – thank you for the compliment but I think we all have worked out that this is the shortest episode of the series for a reason 🙂
