  1. Great episode of the podcast! On the episode title, it’s interesting that the 9th season premiere of Frasier is a two-part episode called “Don Juan in Hell” which features a guest appearance by Shelly Long as an imaginary Diane. I wonder if that was an intentional reference to the title of this episode of Cheers (in addition to a reference to the play within a play).

I also enjoyed your discussion of how Sam and Diane went against the normal rules of TV because they still had chemistry long after sleeping together. I think that’s partly due to the acting skills of Ted Danson and Shelly Long, the writing, and the competitive nature of the Sam/Diane relationship. I agree that by contrast Rebecca never quite recovered after she and Sam slept together but that it didn’t hurt the show too much because it was a broad ensemble by that point.

  2. Diane: “Of course, I could churn out your run of the mill essay on sadomasochism, bestiality, bondage and discipline, but I’m looking for something with a little pizzazz.”

Me, turning to my 13 year-old daughter: “I am not explaining any of those terms to you.”

    1. This one should be safe:

      pizzazz (noun INFORMAL)
an attractive combination of vitality and glamour

I have a 16 year old daughter. I wouldn’t explain those other terms to her either, but she would probably like to tell me what they meant to get a reaction. Teenagers seem to like finding out about these things and embarrassing their parents by explaining the terms to them. *sigh*

  3. I always pictured Diane as being about the same age as Sam. As mentioned several times, Diane has multiple degrees/post-secondary studies (specifically in the series finale she mentions that she’s been asked to speak at “almost all her alma maters”) so she doesn’t have to be right out of her undergrad when she is Sumner’s TA.
