  1. Great to have Cheers Cast back for Season Five! I agree Frasier is the highlight of this episode. I’m glad he is now formally part of the regular cast.

Indeed, with Frasier and Woody having now been made full cast members in the past two seasons, I suspect it was becoming clear that the show did not have to rely so heavily on the Sam and Diane relationship, and that the show could go on when Shelly Long decided to leave. Cheers’ amazing longevity is due largely to the fact that they struck gold with the additions of Frasier, Woody, and Lilith. The strong cast that resulted propelled the show to not only survive Diane’s departure, but to actually thrive comedically as it became more of a true ensemble.

Overall this is a solid season opener. The boat scene on the water was a fun departure from the bar and an impressive set by 1986 sitcom standards. Looking forward to watching along for the fifth season.

  2. I have to imagine Kelsey Grammer, now promoted to regular, was overjoyed at the thought of Shelley Long leaving the show–this would give him the chance to be in non-Diane centric stories. And my Lord did he crush every joke he was given, pretty much through the rest of the series’ run.

I had wanted to watch it anyway, but I started on TRUE DETECTIVE based on Ryan’s recommendation. It is very good, and Harrelson is great in it. I don’t think anyone watching CHEERS in 1985 would have said “Yeah, the guy playing Woody is going to be the biggest star coming out of this show.” #JessePlemons

  3. A surprise bit is the pairing of Frasier and Carla. They’re united in their desire to keep Sam and Diane apart, for very different reasons, and they both know it, and don’t care because they both want the same thing. But seeing Rhea and Kelsey doing the synchronized screams and later dances of joy was so great since they look so different. Those visuals are delightful. And yes, there’s also no beating Frasier’s “Gee, I’ll try.”

I’ll say it again: Shelley is amazing. That jump into the water was perfect. I don’t know how but she made it hilarious. Love it.

So glad to have Cheers Cast back!
