I was only best man once – last year, OHOTMU Nath’s wedding to Lonely Hearts’ Marty, and I had that exact reaction when he asked me.
Great discussion of a fun episode. The Frasier/Lilith-centric outings always stand out as among the best of this era of Cheers. As you note, even though the plot is somewhat derivative of the Sam bachelor party episode from last season, this episode is nonetheless so funny that it has three classic moments that made it into the 200th anniversary retrospective episode.
Frasier saying those Wang Chung lyrics is my favorite part, partly because I was in high school and college when that song was popular. Usually Cheers was not placeable in the time period in which it was produced, which makes it feel like more of a timeless classic. But this is a notable exception where the series used a song that captures the popular culture of the moment in a way that works and is still funny 35 years later.
Eps like this make me wish we had more time with Bebe/Lilith. What a treat it would’ve been to have her around as a regular past Season 8.
I do marvel at how literate and intelligent the Cheers writers were. Originally, they only showed it off thru Diane. But we still get to see that expressed thru Frazier and Lilith, which is perhaps a reason Lilith becomes a bigger presence in the show. The jokes can’t all be baseball and beer references, or the dialog and character interactions would get stale. Characters like Frazier and Lilith push the writers in a different way, keeping the show clever in dialog and wordplay. Just something I thought of watching this episode.
