Yay! I love it when AJ guests on Cheerscast, and when I saw this episode coming up, I truly hoped he’d be on it. Double yay!
I have to agree with everything you both said on this episode, and I like it a lot. The writing, acting, and humor is on point. It’s so good.
Now from overthinking it, I wondered the wisdom of the beard contest’s beer-absorbing test, since Sam is a recovering alcoholic. It’s accepted that he can resist drinking even though he pours alcohol for others all the time. But this is literally pushing the beer in his face. However, I don’t know any way around it, because it sets up the hilarious Norm sucking on the bar gag, and I wouldn’t want to give that up.
Woody’s line hit close to home that the secret to acting is fear. Having been in community theater the last few years, and now directing (how the heck did that happen?), I actually have said a similar thought in the final week before the shows, when there’s still actors struggling with their lines. Rather than fret about them learning their stuff, I just say “Fear works”, and somehow things come together. Also, yes, when I’m doing all kinds of mundane things to prepare for a show, I’ll say to myself “the glamorous life of directing community theater.”
This season is still so fun. Thanks for another great episode, Ryan! (And for playing my intro bit.)
Woody’s physical dexterity and upper body strength remain impressive — he easily jumps over the bar yet again and climbs a rope at a considerable height.
I knew Lisa Kudrow was a guest but was thinking it was closer to the end of the series. This is five years before Friends. She was on Ted Danson’s podcast recently (Woody wasn’t there) and they talked a little about her guest appearance in this episode.
I was just thinking that of the following four long-running sitcoms that had huge series finales — M*A*S*H, Cheers, Seinfeld, and Friends (at least one of which was on the air from 1972 to 2004) — each series had appearances from at least one regular actor from one of the other series:
M*A*S*H had appearances by Shelly Long and George Wendt.
Cheers had appearances by Michael Richards and Lisa Kudrow.
Seinfeld had appearances by George Wendt and Courtney Cox (and Ted Danson was often mentioned!).
Friends had an appearance by Jason Alexander (and appearances by Elliot Gould from the movie M*A*S*H).
