  1. I always find the Woody/Kelly episodes funnier and more exciting than an average episode, especially when they have scenes at the Gaines house and Mr. Gaines is in the episode. I agree that Mr. Gaines is funnier when he’s being mean, especially to Sam at a social event.

All the scenes at the Gaines house were hilarious, including the Ghostbusters references. I remember well the summer of 1989 when there were so many sequels or franchise films, including Batman, Ghostbusters 2, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

My homerun is when Woody tells Kelly that he didn’t look at her and then turns to Sam and says, “Yeah I did, Sam.” Everyone once in a while in these later seasons, Woody will deliver a line in a certain way or will get kind of a twinkle in his eye as almost a meta suggestion that he’s Woody Harrelson rather than Woody Boyd.

I had no idea the chambermaid actress was on General Hospital, which I watch. I looked up who she played, and she has a recurring background role as the hostess at a restaurant on the show, and she has delivered lines every once in a while, so that’s great she has an ongoing gig. She apparently has had an offscreen relationship with Kin Shriner, a longtime veteran of General Hospital who was also the voice of Green Arrow on JLU.

  2. In reference to Count Basie, I can say I did get that reference as a 22 year old, but I have no idea why. Absolutely from other pop culture references, not because I’d ever heard the Count’s music myself, unless my Junior High jazz band director mentioned him. Maybe he was name dropped in cartoons from Warner Bros or MGM. Anyway, at least one person got it at the time.

The scene in Kelly’s room was the best part, and still notable for being away from the bar. In spite of the jokes about sucked into the bar, the show has come a long way from season one in terms of other sets.

Oh I’ve been listening to this one song while writing. You might like it, Ryan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViVR312_pZ8

  3. I knew Count Basie because of Blazing Saddles. When Bart is first shown in his Sheriff outfit complete with Gucci saddlebags, it’s Count Basie and his orchestra who are playing his theme song. Bart rides up to them in the desert and tips his hat to him. I think my Dad pointed out he was a famous jazz musician.

Nerd side note, Woody shares his rather unique middle name with a certain famous starship captain. Captain James T. Kirk was first revealed to have the middle name of Tiberius in an episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series. It was confirmed as canon on screen in live aciton a year after this episode in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
