I agree this episode shows Kelsey Grammar’s ability to lead an ensemble. This episode could almost be seen as an unintentional backdoor pilot for some kind of Frasier series in the future, and Ted Danson coming down with chicken pox helped lead to an 11-year spinoff series.
As you mentioned, I remember that when Ted Danson announced he couldn’t play Sam anymore, there was a brief moment when they pondered having Cheers go on without him, but then it was quickly decided to end the series. Woody’s movie career was already in high gear at this point, after White Men Can’t Jump came out in 1992, and he was already missing some episodes in the last season, so it wasn’t realistic to think he would stay on without Ted Danson. I think it was thematically appropriate to end the series when they did because Sam was always the core of the show, but this episode shows that the series could still have been funny if it had gone on without him.
Oh I also meant to mention that both Frasier and Lilith were apparently at the bar all night until closing time. Who was watching Frederick, and why are the parents of a baby both at a bar until 2:00 a.m.? Too funny.
After listening I put this episode on. Our daughter was home from school, and I asked her if she recognized the actor in the opening.
“Isn’t that the guy who played Carnage? Why does his hair look like that?”
“Yes, that’s Woody Harelson. He’s a regular on this show. The other guy”.
“Hmmm….”
“Close your eyes. Listen to his voice.”
“Hmmm….”
“You’ve met him.” (she did at a convention in Louisville, KY)
“KEVIN CONROY!!!”
Bingo.
Nice!
