Dear Reader, Season 3 Episode 02: The OG Iliad Part II

In the second episode, I continue to look at the source material The Iliad by Homer and translated by Emily Wilson. I examine the second act (Books X-XVI) and third act (Books XVII-XXIV) of the story, discussing key or interesting moments after I give a synopsis of each Book. Is Helen, daughter of Zeus, really to blame for the Trojan War? Listen and find out!

  1. Not even when I bedded this chick and this chick and this chick… It’s not a Greek epic without lists.

I looked at the Internet and it seems humanity is still obsessed with lists.

  2. Man, I had to go through the last one with a dramatis personae list close at hand (preventing the ideal of listening while driving). I might as well change that and just let the wave of names wash over me as a listen this time…

  3. Listening to this episode, I was really struck by the theme of fate vs free will. Whether it’s an augury or just some sound advice from others, the characters seem to have plenty of opportunities to avoid their fate, but they seem blind and deaf to the warnings. At least that seems to be the case for mortals, gods and demi-gods seem to have a bit more agency. Achilles got to choose his fate, a long life of obscurity or a short life of glory. Zeus appears to be capable to defying fate to save Sarpedon, but chooses to abide by fates decree. Then again, that agency may just be an illusion. Perhaps, those with divine blood are just more aware of fate, but, in the end, are just as bound by it. It’s interesting food for thought.

Also, I finished my homework assignment to read The Song of Achilles. I can see why my daughter loves it so much, and I look forward to your coverage of it.

    Thanks for another great episode.
