Sorry for the delay, but great discussion! I have always appreciated Wes Craven as being a bit more of a “thinking man’s” horror director. I think Sara put it into words better than I ever could. He’s trying to say something with the horror and the brutality, not just racking up kills.
I’m a fan of the Nightmare on Elm Street films Craven was involved in. The first is udeniably the best, but Dream Warriors (which he wrote) is my favorite sequel, and the first horror film I saw in a theater. New Nightmare is highly underrated in my opinion. I don’t think most people knew what “meta” was when that film was released, but it tapped that vein years before anyone else.
I enjoyed the first Scream, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t see ANY of the follow-ups. I still recall being shocked that Craven killed off not only Drew Barrymore, but Henry Winkler! Way to eviscerate my childhood, Craven! 🙂
