Maybe it’s because Colan had some experience with this character later in his career, but I never thought of how much the original Mar-vell’s uniform reminded me of the Spectre. All that white and green!
Kirby could never remember how to draw the Skrulls from one appearance to another, so Colan gets a pass on the chin thing. 😉
Chris
They’re SHAPE SHIFTERS, guys!
So that week, the Emperor decided to try a “no chin-lines” thing. It was avant garde and a little transgressive, because you know, it’s reminiscent of the hated Kree. But he was making a statement, and that statement was, “We don’t hate the Kree for how they look. We’re shape-shifters. We wouldn’t be so shallow. We hate the Kree for what they’ve done to us, and for who they are as a culture and a people.” It was just as toxic and wrong as appearance-based animus, but so much more sophisticated. The home world was abuzz, and of course everyone followed suit to show that they were sophisticated, too.
But the week after that, the emperor decided it looked stupid, and it was over just like that.
I stand with my emperor.
actually im not sure Kirby DID invent the kree uniforms was’nt Mar-vel the fist modren kree we saw?
I think so. I did a deep dive on Marvel Unlimited and couldn’t find any examples of the look pre-Marvel Superheroes. I much prefer the green and white outfit to the bikini revamp – there’s a reason it looked so good on Carol Danvers.
