Hyperion to a Satyr: V.i. The Gravedigger Scene

Hyperion to a Satyr – The Fire and Water Podcast Network’s Hamlet Podcast – continues Siskoid’s scene-by-scene deep dive into Shakespeare’s masterwork, discussing the text, but also performance and staging through the lens of several films, television, comics and even a rock opera. In Act 5, Scene 1, Part 1, Hamlet returns from his exile and encounters clownish gravediggers hard at work.

  1. So happy to see this show back!

As usual, the deep dive into things was just fascinating.

Interesting to hear about how Yorick’s skull being held/not held carries weight as does Horatio’s lack of words in some showings.

Always tried to figure out some sort of way that Yorick could have been in Hamlet 2000. Set at a crematorium where bodies are there? Coffin tip over in cemetery revealing a body? Anyways, never thought about the lyrical integration into that version before.

    Great listening!

  2. Steve Martin used a great deal of “the gravedigger scene” in his movie L.A. Story. Rick Moranis plays the gravedigger. Sorry, I couldn’t find a clip.
