I had to go back and check to see if this was an alcohol-fueld special. I think the giggling may have broken the OHOTMU meter!
White Tiger’s lack of ears on his mask bothered me even as a little kid. Maybe they were trying something different, so he didn’t look like Black Panther/Wildcat/Batman, etc.
I feel like Ursa Major is a guaranteed HOT when the Girls get to see his full entry.
Space Phantom looks like he comes from a much later Frank Miller comic. Perhaps he was reining himself in during his Marvel pencilling days, to avoid running into interference from Shooter.
Speed Demon…I never saw IT until now. And now I can’t unsee it. The abs do look like balls. YIKES.
Spidey’s CAMERA gets a diagram? Isn’t it just a basic camera? But no Spider-Tracers? No Spider-Sense? No diagram of how his Spider-Signal or mask lenses work? Lee and Ditko figured this out by ASM Annual #1! They could have just reprinted that here. It’s SPIDER-MAN!
I do agree Spidey probably is the most universally popular hero. I think the mask does a lot of it. Really cements “The hero who could be YOU” angle. Kids definitely gravitate toward him more than Superman or even Batman, it seems.
I have a hard time picking which cinematic Spider-Man I like best. I feel the first two Raimi/Maguire films captured the mood and feel of the early Lee/Ditko comics the best, and that’s my bread and butter. I think Spider-Man 2 is probably still the best entry in the series, even including the excellent animated Spider-Verse films. The weakest of the lot is defintiely ASM 2, but I still like Garfield as the character. Tom Holland is just so sincerely likeable. Probably more so than the often self-centered comic Peter Parker!
Wow. This episode is chock full of characters I have next to no experience with. I’m pretty thankful for that.
Space Phantom – I’ve read his first appearance and the character always struck me as Stan & Jack wanting a reason to not have the Hulk on the team, so here comes the villain that can promote internal strife. Why anyone would want to bring him back is beyond me.
Spider-Man – Definitely the main event of this episode. One of my first Spider-Man comics, he was wearing the cloth version of the black costume the Black Cat had made for him, so seeing both costumes here makes me happy.
If were talking live action portrayals, I think all of the actors have had good and bad points. Of the four (yes, I’m counting Nicholas Hammond but not Shinji Tōdō or Danny Seagren), I think that Tom Holland captures the essence of the character the best, but the one that I go back to the most is Toby Maguire. Garfield was a little too self-confident as Peter, which goes against the normal characterization. Hammond was the first (speaking) one that I saw and I thought he did a good job as the college aged Peter.
If animated Spider-Men come into it, the 90’s “Spider-Man” series was really good. It had some excellent long-form story telling about the college-age Peter. Yeah, some of the choices were … odd (I’m looking at you, Morbius), but overall it’s probably my favorite version of the character outside of the comics.
“We’ll kick out Glory Hole and you can be the new one.” Thanks … I think.
If the OHOTMU editors knew this show would be happening, I don’t think they’d put penis-shaped ‘jade paws’, a character named glory hole, and a speedster named the Whizzer with a phallic costume in such close proximity.
I don’t know how the crew made it through with laughing themselves unconsc
Bob Diamond went out with Colleen Wing (of the Daughters of the Dragon) and was Iron Fist training partner for a while in the Power Man and Iron Fist series by Mary Jo Duffy.
White Tiger was a supporting character in Amazing Spider-Man for a bit where he was an acquaintance of Peter at ESU. It never really led anywhere until he gave up the tole.
