How I missed you guys together! First Oasis and now this!
Listening now, but had to send this to our dear Sean: https://wonder-woman.fandom.com/wiki/The_Brady_Kids
DAG,
This looks awesomely terrible! I can’t wait to watch this train wreck. Thanks!
Awesome episode! All this mythology feels so right to me for Wonder Woman, though I worry she won’t have any friends left with them all becoming supervillains!
I am 100% on your side about the great evils known as mushrooms, though I think we must allow fellow fungus Yeast a pass from our destructive wroth!
I am curious if you think Perez’s run would make a good Compact Comic edition, and if that would have a big surge effect on WW fandom? I was very disappointed with the choice of WW Earth One as the Compact Comic edition, but hope Perez and Rucka’s runs will have some releases eventually in that line.
I’m thrilled, that final Bronze Age run was great and deserves finally being collected. I’m sure the Perez will be recollected soon enough.
Ian,
Yeast gets a pass because bread is the best, but all other fungus must go!
I do think the opening arc of Perez’ Wonder Woman would make a great compact collection. It would definitely highlight some of the best art in DC Comics history.
Another terrific episode, made extra special by the Sean and Greg reunion. Your chemistry made this a particularly lovely listen.
Goodness me, Decay was a very particular looking lady – did you ever see the previous Decay, a villain in the wonderful Paul Kupperberg/Carmine Infantino/Bob Oksner Daring New Adventures of Supergirl series? He was a nasty critter.
Sean, you were a bit mixed up in saying that you would known this issue was written by Len Wein if Terry Long was in it, you’re thinking Marv Wolfman
Now, what was all that about leaving a noodle or a sock on the door when cooking was happening at college?
Wonder Woman on The Brady Kids cartoon – yes that happened, the kids had pet pandas for some reason, Ping and Pong. Plus a stupid dog. And a magic mynah bird, as you do. Diana was actually rather a treat here:

What was that business about leaving a sock or noodles on your doorknob if you were cooking at home college, Sean? Speaking of food, I have a great recipe for Frankie and Benny’s garlic mushrooms, it will change your mind and make you a ‘funghi’.
Diana used to use her tiara as a boomerang all the time in the Silver and Bronze Age, but she didn’t tend to cut throats, happily.
I’m with you, Sean, I disagree with Greg that this Etta Candy was an improvement on the Golden Age version – original Etta was funny and confident and courageous and didn’t give a stuff about what people thought of her being cuddly, she epitomised the ‘fat but fit’ idea. The Perez version always seemed sad, it felt like she and Steve were settling for one another.
Martin,
Thanks for the kind words! It was great to record with Greg again.
In American college dorm rooms, roommates will sometimes create a system that lets the other roommate know if they are entertaining a lady/gentleman. This system is often just leaving a sock on the doorknob to say “Don’t come in.” My joke to Greg was that his college roommate should have done this when his girlfriend was making macaroni and cheese.
Aha, thank you.Happily, we had locks!
Has Greg mellowed over the years? Not a bit, haha.
Thanks for the kind words, but I think it you dear Sean that has Spaghetti Fingers about my coded comment in the previous episode.
Bet You’re Realising Now Essentially
Also Flanger rhymes with Banger (unless you pronounce it wrong).
Paul! I always pronounce ‘Flanger’ wrong until I hear you say it and remember. I also still mispronounce Nicola Scott’s first name because I couldn’t tell if you were messing with me by saying it’s pronounced Nick-er-la. (I still say Nic-o-la)
Thanks for listening!
So many Americans say ‘Ni-Cola’, mind, I’ve also heard people say, for Yvonne, ‘Why-Von’.
Another great episode as I discover this series through this show.
Vomiting as a weapon? I guess my favorite would be the Red Lanterns basically vomiting acid. But I would remind Sean that it was an Anti-Monitor mouth beam that killed the Pre-Crisis Wonder Woman.
I love the idea of adopting Dalton’s rules. Would it be funny if Wonder Woman did?
Diana: I want you to be nice …
Cassie: What if they call my mama a c***-sucker?
Diana: Is she? I want you to be nice until it’s time not to be nice.
Cassie: Like Max Lord that time?
Anyways, thanks again for the great discussion!
The Red Lantern is a great choice for best vomit-based powers! Even though I didn’t live the New 52 Supergirl book, I did like how her time as a Red Lantern changed her. Enough with the “angry young woman” version of Kara!
Well done, Sean and Greg! There is a bit of a slip-up in this issue on page 5. Aphrodite recalls the two children born from her “tragic marriage” to Ares. I may be wrong, but I believe that she had a tryst w/ Ares. At least, that is how I remember the myths. I do like the nice touch of showing the characters’ breath in order to emphasize the cold in the outside scenes toward the end.
My wife agrees w/ you about Vanessa, but I always felt that she added to the series. My wife suggests Dex-Starr, the feline Red Lantern, as a character whose powers are emitted from their mouth and I think that was a good one. When you mentioned Matter-Eater Lad, I also thought of Cottonmouth from the Serpent Society whose powers came from his bionic jaws and teeth.
And regarding food likes and dislikes–don’t get me started. My wife takes your side in the great mushroom debate, but I love them which is a good thing being a long-time vegetarian. I must agree w/ Greg on the matter of canned peaches. Not a fan at all. My particular dislikes include cherries and grapes (I imagine eating them is like trying to eat eyeballs) and coconut (just makes me think I’m eating suntan lotion).
This show is a highlight of each month for us. Thanks again!
If you think grapes are like trying to eat eyeballs, I must introduce you to lychees… but cross your legs
And peaches are hideous in all forms, hairy and matted.
I have had lychees once and only once. I’m not a plain peach fan, but I can handle a peach cobbler.
Super Captain,
Thanks again for writing in! I am not a huge Red Lantern guy, but I always loved Dec-Starr! What personifies seething rage better than a kitten?
My wife is vegan, so she shares your love of mushrooms. I try not to fungi-shame, but yuck!
It’s funny, because I am sensitive to textures in food, which is part of why mushrooms gross me out, but I like lychees.
OMG, the band’s back together!
I wonder if the tiara plot was inspired by Wonder Woman issue 246 (1978) (one of two issues I had as a kid and reread more times than I could count at that time): the issue revolved around some demon (maybe similar in look to Decay?) who stole the tiara and was wearing it for the entire issue. (Also, she somehow absorbed a few people whose faces appeared all over her body.)
Unfortunately there is a mysterious gap around those issues on the DC Infinite app so I couldn’t look any of this up and am relying on the memory of an 8-year-old version of me.
Brian,
Thanks for listening and writing in! That story sounds horrific and awesome! I can see why it was so memorable for you. I am slowly but surely brushing up on my pre-Crisis Wonder Woman and am seeing more and more of its impact on the modern era.
As a cat-owning, mushroom-eating, (sometimes) necktie-wearing, Boston-based listener, I feel unwelcome! Nevertheless, I shall continue to listen and read along!
This made me laugh out loud! Thanks for listening! (Also, all my ideas are bad.)
The Secret Boys are back! Oh this made my heart sing. It’s like Brady Bunch girls got married, getting the gang back together, then the awkward spinoff of the Brady Wives when they overstayed their welcome, and … I don’t know where I was going with that. Well let’s move on to mouthy powers, because segues!
Super breath is such a weird power, and a ridiculous number of characters have it. What I learned reading the early JLA issues is the Martian Manhunter used that power almost every issue he appeared in. It’s like his other powers weren’t important, gotta blow those bad guys down. Plus, there’s naughty connotations, you know?
I’m glad you guys mentioned M-E Lad and 5YL, since one of his great stories was on Prince Evillo’s planet, and Tenzil teaming up with Sugyn, the big viking Fred Flintstone whose power was, you guessed it, super breath. The eater and the blower, together. (See? Naughtiness? See?)
But by far, the best is Star Spangled Kid. What? Oh, you see, in All-Star Comics #58 1976, there’s a panel with SSK charging at a goon, we see the back of SSK’s head, and the sound effect is “CHOMP!” I’ll send it to you. It’s hilarious! And I have it on good authority that this is not SSK’s last biting incident, but that will have to wait for JSApril.
Oh, and Wonder Woman #4 was great. But that’s all been said already, Well ok, I also have a soft spot for the panels of Diana wearing the flannel shirt. Such a great touch of normalcy in this bonkers story.
Thanks for this wonderful show!
Tim!
I love the Tenzil and Polar Boy on Evillo’s planet issue of Legion. The M-E Lad cutaway issues of 5YL are so good!
I have no recollection of SSK biting people. Maybe he was teething?
Great show, Sean and Greg,
Now that I’m re-reading this series with the show, I’m getting a new read on the Kapatelis family. I’d forgotten how soon Vanessa’s life got wrecked by Diana showing up. And Julia had another massive furnished winter home? She’s gotta be dirty. Silver Swan makes more sense by the day.
Two other things:
1. Diana in the flannel totally works for me
2. How dare you forget the details of Patrick Swayze’s greatest film! Roadhouse is the Citizen Kane of Kentucky based karate bar fight films.
I would love a side-story in an annual that shows how Julia makes enough money to afford two homes in the Boston area. I’m betting on an underground English major fighting ring.
Another WONDERFUL episode! Great having Sean and Greg together again. The only thing that could have made this better was if the comic featured Diana teaching Decay how to use the bathroom!
Love all the nods in the discussion to JLI, Who’s Who, Blue Devil…. wait… Shockwave was a joke of a character!?!? WHAT?!!? Them’s fighting words, new guy.
Best Oral Based Power — C’mon guys, we all know it should be Superman’s Super-Breath. But in reality it’s Sgt Belcher’s puking power from the MAN OF STEEL comics. Duh.
First unprovoked Shockwave attacks, and then the Feedback… “Shag, many would say the lesser founder of the Network”. Lesser? LESSER?!? To paraphrase a cancelled comedian, “I brought you into this Network, and I can take you out!!”
Thanks for another great episode… I guess. *grumble* *grumble*
