  1. Another wonderful episode pun fully intended. Loved the dissection and praise of Perez’s art and storytelling! And the analysis of the way Diana and Ares battle it out was very well done!
Regarding the secret questions: I’m a big T. S. Eliot fan, especially of his Four Quartets – the lines about “Time present and time past are both, perhaps, present in time future”, and of course “Humankind cannot bear very much reality” are haunting in their truth and beauty.
And as for artists who really sell emotion – there are so many, but I think I’ll have to go with Lee Weeks – his ability to go from funny to scary to heartbreaking on a dime is unparalleled (as in Batman Annual #2), and Cliff Richard’s- his work on Wonder Woman Mission’s End and Checkmate, both with Rucka, is just phenomenal.

    1. Ian – I am also a huge fan of T.S. Eliot. “The Waste Land” is my favorite poem of all time, with “Prufrock” a close second.

Lee Weeks is a great choice! I’ve loved his work since he and Peter David took over Justice from the New Universe line in the late 80s.

      Thanks for listening!

  2. (Tartis sounds ) a green and red tartis materializes
Well here I em . Back agin sorry I don’t have an invisible jet and my brother misplaced his invisible boat mobile agin .
So I’ll use the lasso of truth. I’m with coffee though I like ice coffee . There’s a coffee shop called 7 brews that’s got flavored lemonades and that tends to be my go to drink when we go there usually mango .
    Secret question
    1. Wonder Woman has had a invisible jet
And a pet kangaroo type creature which of these would you like to have as part of your real world ?

    1. Bucky,
Thanks for writing in! I would love an invisible jet! I would fly everywhere, though I don’t know how you go to the bathroom discreetly on a long flight.

      Flavored lemonades sound yummy!

      1. Funny unuff if asked my family if we could keep them safely we’d probably take the kangaroo as long if got along with dogs we love animals

    1. I still haven’t watched Suits, though it has been recommended to me a bunch.

Dr. Anj’s story is maybe my favorite moment as a podcaster. Freaking hilarious!

  3. Fantastic episode, Sean and Anj. Loved hearing about the collegiate sacrifices you were each willing to make at the whim of a hot girl. Sean’s story is a warm and fuzzy rom-com, while Anj’s is a cautionary tale about the dangers of calculus.

    1. Ryan,
Thanks for writing in! Dr. Anj’s story makes me so happy. I think about it randomly during the day and crack up.

  4. Cheers for another terrific episode, even if it did involve the best character getting killed. What an amazingly dense book this was, it took something like 40 minutes to get through – those were the days. Mind, I could’ve done with, say, a third fewer words… this reads like it was planned as a double-sized finale but nobody for the memo.

As regards a secret question, the best villain upgrade was Jason Woodrue, who progressed from bog standard mad scientist in the Silver Age to the creepy Floronic Man in the Bronze Age.

On Wonder Woman 84, as is the case with the Green Lantern film, I don’t know why everybody hates it so much, it was a perfectly decent watch, I was entertained.

Those romantic Tales of Terror were something else, my life seems to have been so dull by comparison. Does Anj know what happened to that young woman, what a user.

I went looking for the Out of This World theme song, and I enjoyed it, it scans just fine!

    1. Martin! I love that you listened to the theme song from “Out of This World”! That is awesome! I mentioned it to my wife and she has had the song stuck in her head for days, which makes her angry and makes me happy.

Dr. Anj’s story is amazing. I also would love to know what happened to the girl. Wouldn’t it be great if she ended up in a profession that requires a deep understanding of calculus?

  5. I trust anybody who made it thru the first storyline would keep WW on their pull list indefinitely. It just continued to bring powerful stories and glorious artwork. The bar was now set for this series, and I was not going to leave any time soon.

Interesting that this episode dropped during Christian Holy Week between Palm and Easter Sundays. If you squint a bit, there’s some Christian themes in this issue’s conclusion. Not to get too religious, but Jesus and his message are often called “the truth”. Before he was crucified, disciple Peter tried to fight, even drawing a sword and cutting off a servant’s ear. But Jesus stopped him, as this was not his way. You can’t use the ways of war to fight war, only the truth can overcome. My church’s minister even said something similar in the Good Friday service. So Perez is not equating Diana to Jesus, but perhaps intentionally, he wants to bring some of those same sensibilities to her mission. And boy, I got a lot deeper than I expected.

Oh, I never gave my thoughts on coffee. I’ve never drunk it. The smell turns me off, and I simply do not need that much caffeine. Most people who meet me are surprised, and then I say “if this is what I’m normally like, do you really want to see me on coffee?” Oddly, they say no!

The Beetle’s costume change was definitely needed and I love his later costume a lot. But you got me thinking what the original costume would look like drawn by today’s John Romita Jr, and gotta admit, I think I’d love it more. It’s a look that benefits from a less realistic style. Oh yes, that would be amazing!

Thanks for another great episode, gents!

  6. Tim! I, too, see some religious undertones in the climax of the issue. Diana wins not through violence, but by showing the true cost of violence. Powerful stuff indeed!

I am AMAZED by how many people have let me know that they also have a real distaste for coffee. I thought that I was out on an island on this one.

    1. There is a genetic marker that can make you smell and taste coffee like it’s cigarette ashes. Our own Art-Girl has this marker and boy, we hear about it all the time.

This is similar to a marker that makes Brussel sprouts taste “yucky” to half the population, or whether you can smell asparagus in urine.

      1. Siskoid – That is fascinating! I’ve heard of the genetic marker that makes cilantro taste like soap, but not coffee and ash. I can’t say that coffee tastes like ash to me, as that is an insult to ash.

  7. Another great episode! I mean, Dr. Anj’s lasso of truth moment and your sweeter follow-up would have been enough, but luckily you talked about a great comic too. I thought it was a pretty smart solution for Diana to use the lasso and getting Ares to realize he was going beyond war to annihilation.

I always liked the redesign to the full metallic/robotic Brainiac, which is sort of a costume change but maybe more of a reimagining. The melding of that and his original look is also pretty cool.

    1
    1. Justin,
Thanks for listening and writing in! The Braniac redesign was brilliant (and I’m not just saying that because it was done by Perez).

I’m glad you liked the opening Lasso of Truth moments. Dr. Anj’s story was amazing and makes me so happy.

  8. Great show, Sean and Dr. Anj! Perfect for this minister’s post-Holy Week day of relaxation. Perez made an excellent choice to put Ares forward as the main villain of this opening arc. This issue had plenty of awesome action sequences wrapped up w/ that brilliant ending. Perhaps, she cannot outfight the God of War. But Diana shows Ares the inevitable end of his actions, which causes him to abandon the path he is on. “There is a difference between destruction and oblivion” is a good bit of wisdom for the Cold War era and even today.

My wife asked about the spotting of WW’s arms and legs in this issue. I am assuming it is to indicate the battle she has been through, but she thought it looked as if Diana needed a shave. Oh well … She also reports that “Me and the Chimp” sounds like a wonderful choice to get away from apocalyptic world events, especially since she began writing a story about a society of intelligent monkeys and apes during the pandemic.

Speaking of silly TV series, I am something of a con-oh-sewer. “Me and the Chimp” reminded me of “Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp”, an old favorite. But probably, my all-time favorites are The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres.

I would have to think about the best villain upgrade. One that comes to my mind first is Geoff Johns’ reworking of Black Hand for Blackest Night a few years ago.

And where do I stand on coffee? I don’t hate it, but I can’t drink it (or any caffeinated beverage) now due to an anxiety disorder.

    1
    1. Super Captain,
Thanks for listening and writing in! I’m glad you enjoyed the episode. Anj is an amazing guest and his Calculus story makes me smile every time I think about it.

Geoff John’s’ Flash run did such a great job of redesigning the Rogues, and he carried that over to Green Lantern. Black Hand had been such a silly character prior to Blackest Night, but he became genuinely creepy!

And we share-a love for Lancelot Link and Green Acres. I still fund myself humming the theme song to Green Acres at random times.

  9. Anj’s story is the greatest guest story ever told in the history of the Fire and Water Podcast Network.

Sean’s story is the greatest host story ever told in the history of the Fire and Water Podcast Network.

    1
    1. Rob,
I appreciate the kind words, but I don’t think my story holds a candle to Anj’s. His story should be made into a movie!

  10. Rob beat me to it – Anj’s story is the funniest one I have ever heard on the network. I went back and re-listened to it and I was dying with laughter.

Come for the Wonder Woman – stay for the cautionary tales of college crushes and the poetry.

Other notes: Hate coffee. Villain upgrade – businessman Luthor. Silly TV show – Gilligan’s Island. Love Hawkworld, hate that it wasn’t 10 years ago.

This show is killing it. Keep up the great work, Sean!

    1. Paul,
Thank you so much for the kind words! I am shocked by the shared hatred for coffee. I thought for sure that I was out on a limb on this one, but almost all the feedback I have received supports my anti-coffee agenda.

And fully agree on Anj’s story. Too funny!

  11. Thanks for all the love about this story!

I have shaken my head about my idiocy for decades.
I probably should have backed out but at that point it was probably less embarrassing to just take the class.

All that said, it makes for a great story and in many ways I am glad I lived it.

    1. Anj,
It has been decided that your Calculus story is the greatest story in the history of podcasting. I am so glad that you shared it on the show!

  12. Scene: 1980’s movie theatre somewhere in New England
A beautiful wispy-haired girl sips a Mountain Dew and looks to Anj, “Well, how did we do?”
Anj stamps two tickets for Mosquito Coast, turns and stares into her eyes, “You got a C-. I took a dive in the final.”
Girl bites her lower lip, removes Anj’s glasses, “You know, maybe it’s all the lingering fumes from the movie-goers popcorn and cigarettes, but I’m starting to see a whole new side of you.”
Anj: “Sweets, you couldn’t ignore me if you tried.”
Simple Minds: Hey, hey, hey, hey!
