On this inaugural episode of Peace Bound and Down: A Wonder Woman Podcast, Sean is joined by Dr. Anna Peppard to discuss the creation of Wonder Woman, what she represents as an icon, and to answer the key question: What’s with all the bondage?!

Hey Sean,
This was a, yes, wonderful first episode of the show! I loved all the short questionnaire segments as well as the long form discussion of the character with Dr. Peppard. It was thoughtful and literate but also breezy and fun.
This show is already a great addition to the network, can’t wait to hear more. Well done.
Thanks, Rob! Anna was a great guest who brought so much expertise and insight to Winder Woman as a societal icon.
Wonder folk! What a premiere episode! I loved the deep dive into academia! Can’t wait to hear more!
Thanks, DAG! Anna is brilliant and it was amazing to hear her perspective.
Fantastic debut Sean! Dr. Peppard brought some real insight into the character I hadn’t quite thought of before. Would love to sit in on her classes!
Love the “Lasso of Truth” and “Bringing Peace” segements. Looking forward to more!
Thanks, Chris! I would also love to be in her comics studies course.
Nice start, Sean. Dr. Peppard certainly provided lots to think about with regard to the Amazing Amazon. TBH, I am probably a bigger George Perez fan than a Wonder Woman fan so I am not as familiar with her Golden Age roots as those of Superman and Batman. I probably first encountered her on the Super Friends cartoon and shortly thereafter on the Lynda Carter TV show.
Lasso of Truth and Bringing the Peace are great ideas. And my wife has said that very thing about pockets many times. Looking forward to listening to where you go from here.
Thanks, Captain! That’s amazing that your wife also has an issue with the absence of pockets. My wife immediately volunteered this idea when I asked her how she would bring peace to man’s world.
I know I’m not on the list (although I would like to be) but as soon as you opened with the “Lasso of Truth” I started thinking of what I would bring up. (Full disclosure, I also did this whenever you had “Secret Questions” on your other shows.) 😀
Gene – thanks for listening! I hope you’re on the mend. We can record together anytime!
I like that although the focus is no Perez’ run, there’s room on the show for other iterations! Great premiere.
Thanks, Siskoid!
Great opening episode!
I love this prologue before the Perez run, teaching us about Wonder Woman before we hit the primary focus! Great guest and great talk!
Thanks, Dr. Anj! I can’t wait for your episode to drop next. That was so much fun to record!
It’s terrific to finally have the first instalment of the network’s Wonder Woman podcast. You, Sean, are a terrific host.
As regards the title, I get that ‘peace’ and ‘bound’ are words associated with Diana (though I was expected a comma or connective dash) but what’s the ‘down’ all about? I think my brain is full!
Anna brought so much to the opening show, I learned a few things. Hopefully she’ll be back later on to talk about a comic or two… I’m glad to hear the show won’t be all George Perez, there are so many great runs. The post-Crisis series is really good, but so was the Dan Mishkjn stuff that preceded it, and the pre-Mike Deodato scripts by Bill Loebs were loads of fun, he brought back some of the playfulness of the Golden Age Diana which I feel was lost in the post-Crisis version’s efforts to show Wonder Woman as a heroine who could stand alongside Superman and Batman. Maybe try the space pirate storyline from #66-71, which shows Diana’s leadership qualities and throws in some sexual politics. And of course, it has the spirit of hope, and power of friendship that was such a wonderful part of the Perez run.
Roll on next month!
Mishkin, even!
Thanks, Martin! I will definitely have Anna back to talk about an issue down the road. Next episode, Dr. Anj and I talk about the end of volume 1 of Wonder Woman and discuss our favorite pre-Crisis stories.
A great start Sean, and Dr. Peppard is a terrific guest. I’m looking forward to the next episode!
Thank you, Gene!
Whew! I don’t know if I’m smart enough to listen to this podcast. It was fantastic! More with Dr Peppard, please.
Oh, Sean. I thought “Bringing the Peace” was supposed to be how *you* would bring peace, not how your wife would. (I tease, because I’m a great friend.)
Till next time, Wonderful One!
Thanks, Tim! I loved having Anna on the show and was simultaneously intimidated and amazed by her brilliance.
Hey, happy wife, happy life, right?
Thanks for listening!
Really enjoyed the debut show, Sean. Anna was an ideal guest, and now I’m going to have to track down her article about Greer Nelson, as I have always had a soft spot for that character as both the Cat and Tigra (even wrote a review of the Tigra complete collection book at another site 4 (!) years ago).
And I found your wife’s idea of pockets being a key to world peace quite intriguing – it reminded me of a detail in the 1915 novel Herland by Charlotte Gilman Perkins about a hidden all-woman society: their very attractive and practical clothing contains all kinds of pockets.
Edo – Thanks for listening! I’ll have to check out that Perkins Gilman story. I’ve only ever read “The Yellow Wallpaper” by her.
What a great start, Sean! Dr. Anna Peppard was a fantastic guest. I wasn’t familiar with her work, but I’m checking Amazon now. Supersex sounds like one of those comics 13 year old me would hide at the bottom of my stack along with a random Heavy Metal or Vampirella. I really liked that you both put a spotlight on how superior H. G. Peter’s art on Wonder Woman was in comparison to most golden age artists. His style had a clean fluidity to it that really cut through the usual slog of many golden age stories.
George Perez is my favorite comic book artist of all time. And I always felt his work on Wonder Woman was his apex of detail and storytelling. I’m looking forward to this podcast and re-visiting this Wonder Woman run. Great job.
Brett – Thank you so much for listening and for commenting! I fully agree that Anna is brilliant and did a great job analyzing Wonder Woman’s place in culture.
I love H.G. Peter’s art as well. It makes me feel luge the stories are taking place in the Great Gatsby.
Great debut episode, Sean. I really liked starting off with a deep conversation about Wonder Woman as a character and icon and Dr. Peppard was the perfect guest for that. So glad to have you back in the podcasting world on a regular basis and very much looking forward to more.
Thank you so much, Justin! It’s really nice to be recording again. Thanks for listening!
