Siskoid Cinema presents… No Escape from Kurt Russell, the show that explores the filmography of one of American cinema’s best leading men and tries to get a handle on his mystique. Why is it we’ll watch anything so long as Kurt Russell’s name is attached to the project? On this episode, Siskoid and the DC Dave discuss 2004’s Miracle. A hockey biopic? Yeah, but Kurt Russell is in it!

Thanks for this episode, I’ve not actually seen the film but I’m going to seek it out sooner rather than later. I wasn’t aware when i first heard of it that it was a sports bio pic. I do know how difficult those are to get right as often they have to drop out so many key elements of a career or lead up to a moment. For example American Underdog which completely skips Kurt Warner’s season in NFL Europe which was absolutely necessary to demonstrate he could play 11 man football after excelling at Arena League. The same goes for the likes of Remember The Titans or We are Marshall or Rush.
So it’s good to learn from this podcast that the resident Hockey Announcer thinks that this film is closer to the true story as it gets and that Siskoid (A Canadian who doesn’t care for hockey? What next a Scotsman who doesn’t drink?) has plenty of research to back this up. Dave did a great job in managing to show his knowledge and experience of how things on the rink can look as well!
Thanks to both Dave and Siskoid for this episode to point me to a film I might not have placed higher on my watch list till now.
What a great episode! “Miracle” was so much better than I thought it was going to be when I first sat down to watch it, so I am glad to see it pop up on this show. I love that the two of you focused much more on the coaching aspect of the film that the plot or the historical aspect of this team or how well it played as a biopic or sports film. This is one of those movies where you could simply talk about the “Rocky” vibes and that would feel like it covered enough so to see you both go at it from a different angle than I would have expected made this a very interesting conversation.
As I listened, I kept thinking about the question Siskoid asks towards the end of these with “Is it a good Kurt Russell movie” and I was leaning mostly in the direction that anyone else probably could have pulled this off. Gene Hackman, Nick Nolte, Denzel, Al Pacino, Matthew McConaughey all competently played coaches in various films; did Kurt really do something unique here?
But then you both made such an excellent point about how well Kurt disappeared in this role, and he wasn’t doing some impression, he really transformed into someone else here, so much so, that you can kind of forget this is a Kurt Russell film. The way his body moved, his posture, his walk, it was just a masterful performance. So, yeah, this is a really good Kurt Russell film, and it could be his best performances in a film featured on this show since it began.
Thanks to the both of you for covering this one.
