Siskoid Cinema presents… No Escape from Kurt Russell, the show that explores the filmography of one of American cinema’s best leading men and tries to get a handle on his mystique. Why is it we’ll watch anything so long as Kurt Russell’s name is attached to the project? On this episode, Siskoid and The Fantastic Pour’s Brett Young discuss 1989’s Tango & Cash. A Sylvester Stallone vehicle, Siskoid? Yeah, but Kurt Russell is in it!

Fun discussion! I think I first saw the film when my friends and I rented it. It fit in well with the action and comedy movies that were our bread and butter at the time. I was always kind of surprise they never tried to make a sequel to this, because I seem to recall it went over well. This is where I first really took notice of Terri Hatcher (although I may have seen her on TNG already) and was pre-crushing on her before Lois & Clark’s debut.
Is it a great movie? No, but as Brett pointed out, it’s entertaining. That’s usually all I want out of a film, myself.
The first time I noticed her was an episode of MacGyver!
Great show, Siskoid and me. Finally this Oscar-worthy film gets the adoration it deserves. And thanks for having me on No Escape, Siskoid. I had do much fun, it was a blast!
If you think lavishing praise on me will allow you to escape, you’re wrong. There is NO ESCAPE.
This isn’t the worst prison in America, you know.
I was working at a movie theater at the time and so saw this in the theater.
It was a big loud mess … fun if you are looking for a big loud mess. Certainly the ‘rivals who become friends’ trope works well with buddy cop movies. Palance chews the scenery.
But this was my first Teri Hatcher interaction and immediately swooned! Yes, she doesn’t seem to be the right fit for a Sheila E character (why not hire Sheila E??). When I saw her cast as Lois, I think I melted.
I love this flick! The “bad cop/worse cop” scene where they stop just before the high five is one of my all time favorites. The idea of more solo movies of the characters is intriguing. I think I’d enjoy both series, with a slight preference for Tango. Evidently Stallone was trying to get a sequel off the ground in 2019, but Russell wasn’t interested.
It’s not my favorite Teri Hatcher film, though. That honor goes to Brainsmasher, a cheesy B-movie co-starring Andrew Dice Clay, if you can believe it.
