  1. Loved the discussion, gents. I have no idea why I didn’t pick this series up when it was first released, since I was a huge fan of Harris on Starman. I think it was honestly due to Elseworlds burnout. DC was cranking those things out left and right, and charging $5-$7 for them because they were “prestige” format. And the quality was hit and miss by this point. I kept meaning to look into it, but the years continued to roll on. I did find the third series, “The Whistling Skull” TPB at Ollie’s cheap, but I still haven’t gotten around to reading any of it. Now I really want to, even if the twists are now spoiled for me. That’s what I get for waiting nearly 30 (GASP!) years.

  2. Ok for the doc I got better super hero code name for him there is public domain super hero called Mr whiskers a young man who dresses like an old man to fight crime . So for the doc I suggest he takes the same gimmick adds a pulp twist to it and becomes . Old doc Justice who prescribes two fists full of danger when he fights evil . There is a dc hero called the Heckler who is essentially bugs bunny as human super hero .
That has the same gimmick as doc .
    Was talking about .
    Any ways here’s my
    Fantastic question
    1. If you didn’t know your pro wrestling history
Some did step in to ring as Batman .
My question who on JSA would make the best pro wrestling gimmick?

    1
    1. Thanks, Bucky. Best wrestling gimmick has to be The Atom with the full face mask and being a little tough guy jumping off the top rope!

  3. Great discussion, guys. I haven’t read these books, but Chris Franklin above does remind me that I have read The Whistling Skull and never realized it was a sequel.

As a dedicated and diehard New York Yankees fan, the sports discussion here raises painful memories. That 2004 ALCS tore out my heart and mashed that sucker flat.

  4. Always up for a good discussion of an Elseworlds book, esp. one of the better ones like this. Like you guys, I very much loved the look and characterization of both Dr. Midnite/Owl and Hourman/Clock – and was sorry to see Doc get taken out so soon in the second issue.
By the way, the title of the 2-parter you reviewed here is “The Liberty File,” i.e., the ‘file’ is singular. “The Liberty Files” is the title of the tpb (since one of you asked) which collects both this and its sequel, “The Unholy Three.”

  5. I’m a comics fan, and a Boston sports fan, but not so much a licorice-flavor fan. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this episode! However, similar to Chris F., while I am not ‘burned out” on Elseworlds, because I haven’t bought any since the first one, I am tired of skewing the Golden Age timeline. To me it matters that Hour Man and Dr. Mid-Nite were not concurrent JSA members in the 1940s. That’s a minor point, but what really irks me is the inclusion of Black Canary in any JSA WWII story! Dinah is a post-war character! I’ve listened to at least three podcasts recently that focused on the JSA in WWII with Black Canary! Grrrrr!
    Anyhow…
Dr. Anj’s crime fighing alias is, of course, Dr. Anj Anj!

  6. It’s great to be back at the Fantastic Pour Lounge – Anj is always a great guest. Mind, that was an awful lot of Boston sports talk, I confess I fast forwarded..

I’ve heard of these books but as with other commenters, I had a bit of Elseworlds burnout around this time. Now I see the disturbing business with using a dead woman’s dress as a mask, I’m glad I passed – nightmare! Also, Madame Fatale missed a trick.

    1. Thanks, Martin. The story is a bit dark at times, but it’s worth a read. It moves fast and is a great story overall. I’m wounded you fast forwarded the sports talk, but since it was about Boston, I’m not taking it personally!

      1. It’s not personal, Prof Alan is also tickling Anj’s sports bone on the latest Quarter Bin and despite my love and respect for both chaps, I glazed over.

Boston is great, I was due there only last week but the stupid cruise ship got diverted to New York, and my dinner with Anj never happened. Dang!

  7. Great episode, as usual. I remember really enjoying the Liberty Files and Unholy Three, and this show inspired me so I’ve just pulled them out to read them. And Dr. Mid-Nite is cool, but not as cool as the Sandman! Plug plug…

I enjoyed the sports talk. Despite hating the Celtics (I grew up in the “we owe you won” era of the Sixes with Dr. J), I went to quite a few Red Sox games when I was in college. I loved Fenway Park, having only been to Phillies games at the Vet prior to college.

  8. Sorry I’m late, but Aunt Harriet got stuck in an alternate reality and I had to rescue her.

I have a cute Dr. Mid-Nite story. I am a massive comic book fan. My first JLA comic was a JSA crossover, so I adore the JSA!

Over 17 years ago, I came down with an odd neurological problem. One side effect is that I have SEVERE sensitivity to light. I live mostly in the dark. When I leave the house, I wear a hat with a large brim and special glasses that filter part of the light spectrum.

One of my catch phrases is “I always wanted to be a super hero when I grew up, I just didn’t expect it to be Dr. Mid-Nite!” 🙂 🙂 🙂
