Who’s Hot and Who’s Not? Ep.22: Capt. Storm to Cave Carson

A P.T. boat commander. A bisexual anti-hero. Batman’s rooftop girlfriend (twice). A modern-day swashbuckler. A professional spelunker. Which are hot, which are not? The Girls of the Hot Squad continue evaluating Who’s Who #4’s entries based on sheer datability.

Featuring permanent panelists Isabel, Josée, Nathalie, Shotgun, and Amelie.

  1. A big one for hotness, containing, in my opinion, the HOTTEST of all entries in Who’s Who history.

Captain Storm: I think its interesting how the girls fixate on the way the featured artist draws the character as if that’s their permanent look, even though Irv Novick drew Bruce Wayne and Barry Allen with essentially the same face. And Jack Kirby’s Captain Storm essentially looked just like Nick Fury. Its another one of those things longtime comic fans take for granted.

Catman: I haven’t re-read his 80s appearances in a long time, but I believe the cape and cowl were supposed to be the magical Egyptian cloth elements. He even tried to rub it on his damaged face, but it didn’t “heal” him completly. I believe those injuries came courtesy of …

Catwoman: What more is there to say? This was definitely one of those illustrative awakenings. The Brent Anderson image is fine, but Selina’s face in the main image is muddled. Stevens is a masterpiece of both illustration and design!

The Cavalier: Yep, this is his best moment. He’s one of those guys who shows up when Batman’s rogues are all released, but rarely gets his own stories, outside of a reimgaining by Tim Sale in Legends of the Dark Knight. I do like the original stories drawn by the great Dick Sprang, however!

Cave Carson: Tim Truman was an indie artist, so I think that’s what the girls are picking up on. Way outside DC’s house style of the time.

Cute cat pics! I have two gray tabbys. Both boys. One is old, fat and cranky. The other is young and insane. I’m more of a dog person, but I always seem to have cats…

  2. This was AN awakening … but maybe not THE awakening.

Captain Storm – girls: “Hey, Captain, why the long face?”

Catwoman – Yes, the Dave Stevens Catwoman is brilliant and certainly ‘awakening’ for some. For me it was like a nudge from sleep. But Stevens’ Dolphin page (yet to be seen by the squad) was an earthquake-like awakening! I do love both pages. But I am partial to at least 2 other of her costumes. Probably nudges things down a bit for me.

The Cavalier – given his sword and outfit, I guess I can say bucket boots have been foiled again! I love the audacity of this costume. How easy can it be to run away from Batman in such a thing. But still, I think I would probably wear this as a super-villain leading to many an imprisonment. En garde!!

No current cat but many in my life and always partial to a tortoise-colored or calico.

    Great show as always!
Looking forward to the review of the other Catwoman looks!

  3. I don’t really have a lot of experience with this group of characters, with the exception of Catwoman. I read some Captain Storm in Crisis & New Frontier and Catman in Secret Six. I know of Cave Carson & The Cavalier, but that’s it.

While Dave Stevens did a great job on his entry, when I think of Catwoman that isn’t Julie Newmar, Jim Balent is the one that comes to mind. Probably due to by “Batman Phase” in the 90’s. 😉

As for the cats, I’m a dog person so I have no opinion. (My girlfriend, however, wants me to get her a sphinx cat for some reason.)

  4. This show gets better all the time! I don’t own a cat I have an evil Chihuahua which is redundant!

  5. First, thanks for sharing the pictures of your cats. I always like to see everyone’s pets. I’ve always said I’m too insecure for a cat, since they’re so indifferent. I have a 50-pound puppy who is so hyper she may love me to death.

During Len Wein’s run, Selina reformed and became Bruce Wayne’s girlfriend. A piece of Catman’s cape seemingly saved Catwoman’s life in Batman 324. The story didn’t definitively say if the cape saved her or not. I’m not going into too much detail, because I don’t want to spoil it if you haven’t read it. If you wonder why I’m worried about spoiling a comic from 1980, well, Wein’s run is one of my favorite runs in Batman history. I hope you will all give it a try.

As for the Dave Stevens art piece, yes, it is stunningly beautiful. Stevens often used his ex-wife Brinke Stevens for his model, but he seldom drew her completely. She said he would draw her body and stick someone else’s head on it. Supposedly, she even modeled for him after their divorce. Over the years, I’ve seen plenty of photos of Brinke that Dave took and used as a photo reference for his art. One of the Rocketeer books featured the photo of Brinke that Dave used to draw the famous “shocked Betty” picture where Betty has her arms over her…well, you know.

On the Catwoman entry, that Selina head in the surprint sure ain’t Brinke, but the Catwoman body on the main image definitely is. This is going to sound so sleazy, but I think I would recognize Brinke’s legs anywhere. Brinke later became a star in direct-to-video horror movies, and teenage and early 20s me was a huge fan. She has a unique exotic look that many not appeal to everyone, but I always thought she was one of the most beautiful women to step in front of a camera. The further I go, the sadder I get, so I’m going to check out now.

  6. Fun show, everybody… but I cannot listen to this while biking in the mountains… I almost laughed myself off a steep drop — again! That’s almost as bad as losing a sandwich…

A few comments off the top of my head:

Captain Storm: The main image is an almost-identical pose of the Captain from the cover of Captain Storm #1 (also drawn by Irv Novick), including having his leg getting blasted by enemy fire. The Captain says on the cover, “It’s only wood!– I’ll get another!” (Which I think I’ve heard my Aunt say after a boyfriend breakup…)

Catman: I first encountered this character in a Hostess Cup-Cake advert and thought he was one of those made-up villains to sell the snack cake, like Iceberg Head, the Vacuum Thief, and the Pigeon Person (you cannot see individual entries). I later saw this Who’s Who entry and went, “Wait, he’s real?”

And Gail Simone is a pervert?! Sure, she wrote an episode of a Batman cartoon that was banned by Cartoon Network because it included a musical number where Black Canary, Catwoman, and the Huntress sing about the sexual shortcomings of several superheroes (in a way that brilliantly went over my and sister’s very young heads when we watched it on DVD)… but that doesn’t mean she’s… um… hmm…

Catwoman: There is a brilliant poster illustrated by Brian Bolland that depicts Catwoman’s various looks throughout the ages that would make a thorough, if not complete, reference for the future review.

The Cavalier: If Auntie Amelie thought the long-term ploy of the lead hankerchief was diabolical, wait until she meets Batman’s fire-throwing foes that wore asbestos costumes…

      1. Not really, Uncle Siskoid. Thank you for correcting me. And my apologies to Auntie Josée for not recognizing her voice…
