FW Presents: The Mirror Factory #5 — The Mark of Zorro

Sharpen your swords and don your capes — it’s time to ride the dusty roads of Los Angeles with El Zorro!

In this first in a series of episodes celebrating Zorro Month on the Fire and Water Podcast Network, Max is joined by special guest Ryan Daly to talk about the original tale written by Johnston McCulley 101 years ago! The enemy of tyranny first appeared in serial form in “The Curse of Capistrano,” which was quickly collected and republished as “The Mark of Zorro.” The book was a sensation, launching a legend that still leaves it’s mark on pop culture today! Max and Ryan discuss the timelessness of the original novel, the lasting appeal of the dashing character, and why Zorro could be even more relevant today than when he debuted more than a century ago.

Then, Ryan will read a passage from “The Mark of Zorro” featuring Zorro’s thrilling call to arms and the formation of … a League of Avengers?

FW Presents: The Mirror Factory #4 — The Student

Coffee break’s over and it’s time to get to work — The Mirror Factory is back in business! A very special guest joins host Max Romero in this episode: Mrs. Mirror Factory! Max’s wife Sandy Salinas joins us to talk about one of her favorite short stories, “The Student,” by Anton Chekhov. Together the pair will discuss the author’s brief tale of hope, how it can provide inspiration to artists of every stripe, and the warmth that can be found on a chilly Russian evening. Sandy will then share a passage from what Chekhov himself called both his favorite short story, and his “manifesto for optimism.”

Welcome back to The Mirror Factory! In this episode, Max Romero is joined by a very special guest — Fire and Water OG Rob Kelly! Rob brings to the Factory a favorite passage from his favorite book; W. Somerset Maugham’s literary classic, “The Razor’s Edge.” Together Rob and Max will discuss why this passage is so meaningful to Rob, the evolving nature of spirituality, and how home can be a very different place than where you started. Rob will read his passage for our listeners, and then it’s off to the Mail Room for your listener’s comments!

Our special guest Dr. Anj joins host Max Romero to talk about a favorite passage from the granddaddy of fantasy fiction — J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring.” Together Anj and Max will talk about a small — but pivotal — moment from the book, the difference between pity and mercy, and whether or not Anj would still whack Gollum. Then, Anj will read his passage for our listeners.

FW Presents: The Mirror Factory #1 — Fahrenheit 451

It’s the premiere of a brand-new show on The Fire and Water Podcast Network — literally! Join us for The Mirror Factory, a literary podcast hosted by Max Romero and featuring a different special guest on each episode. Guests will tell us about a favorite passage from a novel, novella, or short story — and why it means so much to them — and then give a special reading of that passage for listeners.

In this first episode, Max explains why books are so important to him, why he could never destroy a book (except when he does), and how that makes him think of Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451.” Then, Max reads a passage from this sci-fi classic that is both terrifying and, somehow, hopeful.
