  1. Glad to have the show back. Interesting that Ryan’s jail time (note the presence of attorney Omar Uddin as the guest) is being handwaved as “back trouble.”

In the Later with Bob Costas episode with the Charles Bros and James Burrows, they mention that the decision to replace Coach with a younger character had some influence from NBC. Cheers’ lead-in, Family Ties, naturally had a huge teen/younger person audience, most of which were tuning Cheers out. So when they were deciding how to replace Coach, having it be someone not middle aged factored into it. Luckily, that decision made creative sense, as well, as Sam went from the student to the teacher.

Ted Danson’s read on the “I like to think he’s still around” is one of my favorites from the show. The affection he felt for Nicholas Colasanto melds perfectly with how Sam felt about Coach.

  2. Yay, you’re back! Always good to hear Omar, too! I don’t know much about woody Harrelson’s career, but I think that he had already appeared on Broadway by the time he was cast in Cheers. He certainly had enough New York stage experience to have an agent who could get him an audition!
