  1. It’s great to have Cheers Cast back! Another strong performance by Kirstie Alley. I like the scene with her hair all messed up and she stops at the bar to greet Al. The way she says, “Hello” to Al is funny. It’s also great when Sam asks if she has a barrette and she cries, “I lost it.”

I hadn’t realized before this rewatch that it was this far into the series before we saw the inside of Melville’s. We see it quite a few more times for the rest of the series.

I agree Sam has definitely been dumbed down a lot here. He ran the bar just fine through season five but now he’s unable to do so. And for some reason he’s trying to use the handle of a tennis racket to operate a computer?

All in all this is a very fun episode. I’m looking forward to rewatching season seven along with the podcast.

  2. To me Sam struggling to manage the bar makes sense. Everything under Lillian would be computerized with reports needed and whatnot which is not how he would’ve run it before. Even as a kid it made sense that he’d need/want Rebecca back in the role down the line.

The fact that it took this long to get to Melville’s is another demonstration of the show just wasting that location as a source of stories/scenes. That’ll be another couple years before we get a recurring character out of it is just mind-boggling. It’s an easy and regular source of conflict and comedy for the show and they spent most of the series without it.

    1. Very good point about Melville’s being a possibility for conflict that just wasn’t realized for another season or so. During the Diane years, outside conflict wasn’t needed, because the main drama in the show was with Sam and Diane themselves. Season 6 is still exploring how much drama to get out of Sam and Rebecca. But as their relationship drops away from being the driving force of the show, and more a workplace ensemble, it makes sense for an outside adversary to appear. And using Melville’s rather than trying to do Gary’s Olde Towne Tavern was a great call with its physical proximity. Could it have been done sooner? Sure! But it didn’t feel like the show was missing anything either at this point, so it’s something to look forward to.

  3. Rebecca was so good in this episode. She had a real roller coaster of emotion, and hilariously so. It is weird having no B or C plots, but I didn’t find myself missing them. And of course, I’m glad Cheerscast is back! I was starting to feel its absence last week. Now all is right with the world. Or at least Boston.
