Yeah, I definitely had this episode mixed up with the one coming up next season where Sam plays on the Red Sox farm team, or I thought it was the same episode. Anyway, this episode has some nice moments, not least of which is the reference to Coach. As you noted, Coach doesn’t get mentioned as much as Diane, partly due to the fact that he passed away, and this was a nice opportunity to pay a tribute to him.
I was thinking that, with the scene at Yankee Stadium, this might be the first episode with a scene set outside of the Boston/New England area, but then I remembered we had all those third-season episodes in which Diane and Frasier were in Europe. But other than that, it is unusual to have episodes where the characters are seen outside of Boston, other than a handful of episodes set at Sam’s vacation getaway spots in New England. And I know we’ll see Norm, Cliff, and Cliff’s mom in California next season.
Having Sam give up 27 home runs to one guy is definitely comedic exaggeration.
The actual record for one pitcher/hitter combo is 11. And naturally it includes pitchers with much longer careers than Sam’s.

Also, no manager would ever let his reliever (they didn’t call them closers until the 90s) face a guy who owns him that badly.
Sam’s #16 jersey was on display at Fenway Park years ago. It might still be there. It’s not totally out of line to assume that Sam would be given a home jersey for an old-timers event at Yankee Stadium, so it’s not completely wrong for him to wear that. I don’t think we see any of the real Red Sox wearing it, do we?
The pitcher who actually wore #16 in the 70s was Jim Lonborg. Apparently the picture of Sam behind the bar is actually Lonborg.
Wow, thanks for that info about pitcher/hitter home run record. That’s very interesting.
